Murat Ates of The Athletic: During Connor Hellebuyck’s exit interviews back in April, he aired his displeasure with the Jets direction. The Jets listened to trade offers before the draft, but obviously, nothing was finalized.
Hellebuyck is two years into his seven-year contract that carries an $8.5 million salary cap hit. He won the Vezina Trophy and Hart Trophy two years ago, but struggled last season, outside of Team USA’s Olympic gold medal.
“For me, it’s winning a Stanley Cup. That’s my goal, and that’s all I have left,” he said in April. “I don’t play this game for the money; I don’t play it for the fame. I do it for my own personal fun, and part of that is winning a Cup. For me, I’m just looking at … how can I get that? How can I get there?”
Hellebuyck now joins Pierre-Luc Dubois, Patrik Laine and Jacob Trouba as players who made a trade request to get out of Winnipeg.
The Jets will be looking for fair value for Hellebuyck, something that won’t be easy. The Jets could use a top-six forward, ideally a center or right winger. They signed Stuart Skinner, but would likely need a goaltender to help fill the loss.
The Buffalo Sabres may still be the best option as they have Alex Lyon and Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen in net, and Josh Norris, Ryan McLeod and Jack Quinn up front.
There is nothing imminent and a holdout might become an option to put more pressure on Cheveldayoff.
