Could Cale Makar get $20 million on his next contract in Colorado?
Anthony Di Marco of the Daily Faceoff joined TSN Radio in Montreal on Monday and was asked about the Colorado Avalanche and defenseman Cale Makar. Makar still needs an extension, and Di Marco thinks he could get $19 million to $20 million on his next deal when he signs in Colorado.

NHL Rumors: When Will Quinn Hughes and Cale Makar Sign New Contracts?
Host: “Now just one more for you here. Joe Sakic has expressed confidence that the deal gets done with Cale Makar before the season happens. Just looking at that contract, what does the deal eventually look like? And is there any reason that maybe Colorado should be a little bit nervous going into the season with Makar not signed?”
Anthony Di Marco: “I don’t think so. I think Makar is probably happy there. Like he’s won what, at least probably two Norris trophies. He’s won a Stanley Cup. Like this isn’t like a player like, let’s say, Quinn Hughes that was enjoying little to no success in terms of a team perspective with the Vancouver Canucks.
Like Makar’s already won. He’s already been crowned probably the undisputed best defenseman in the NHL. So I don’t think that they should be worried that he’ll take off exit stage left or what have you. And they’re a perennial Stanley Cup contender.

In terms of what the contract looks like, like I mean, he was drafted in 2017; it’s 2026, so he’s 27 years old. I mean, if they go eight years, guys, like you’re probably looking at what, $19-20 million. If you’re going shorter term, maybe you could get them around, like, in that 15 to 18 range.
Like that Leo Carlsson contract that the Flyers, just that grenade they chucked across the continent, like that completely rejigged everything. Now listen, you’re talking about a 21-year-old center compared to a 27-year-old Norris trophy-winning Stanley Cup defenseman, so it isn’t apples to apples.

But if he’s going long term here and he’s signing for seven years, that takes him to like 34 years old, which would make a lot of sense given his age and where he is with the team; he has to be pushing $20 million on AAV.”
NHLRumors.com Note: On Sunday during an exhibition classic with Colorado Avalanche Alumni, current General Manager and President of Hockey Operations Joe Sakic told the media he is pretty confident he will get a new extension in place with Cale Makar. Sakic added he isn’t worried about the September 15th deadline to sign Makar to an eight-year deal.
Remember, on September 16th, the CBA changes, and the max contract length for a player staying with his team is seven years. In addition, Minnesota Wild defenseman Quinn Hughes is still out there needing an extension as well. With the market changing, these guys could get 20 percent of the cap on their next deals.
