An interim GM named
This morning, the Detroit Red Wings named Shawn Horcoff as interim GM of the Red Wings and will manage day-to-day roster decisions, salary cap, and hockey operations personnel.
“As our process continues to find the best possible leader for Red Wings hockey operations, I’m appreciative of Shawn for stepping up to serve in this capacity,” said Ilitch. “His knowledge of our organization and range of experience allows us to operate with a clear decision-maker in place for the season ahead, while maintaining our commitment to carry out a thorough, methodical search process on our own timeline. Shawn has my complete support, and the authority to make decisions in the best interests of our organization.”
The GM search continues
Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet joined Dave McCarthy on SiriusXM NHL Network Radio Morning Skate on Monday to discuss what’s happening in Detroit with the Red Wings and where things stand in their GM search.

Detroit Red Wings Rumors: GM Search, Alex DeBrincat, and Simon Edvinsson
Dave McCarthy: “With Elliotte Friedman, Sportsnet, and the 32 Thoughts podcast, from your understanding, where are we at with the Detroit Red Wings in their search for a general manager? Are you surprised that they don’t have anybody officially in place in that role yet?”
Elliotte Friedman: “I’m trying to be, Dave, I am a really naturally positive guy. Okay, I always try to find the best in everything, and I remember we were going through the Nashville search, and it was taking a long, long time, and then the people are like, “What are they doing? This is taking forever, and I was just like,” to me, it was all about if you get the right person, then I’m willing to look at the process now. So I’m willing to be open-minded about this.
This is a little bit unusual. I don’t think that there’s anything wrong with saying that. I think at times it’s looked different. I think that there are some things, and the other thing too is that they have some guys, like (Simon) Edvinsson, who need to be signed. Are they going to sign them with the current rules or the new rules?
Time is Ticking Away for the Detroit Red Wings
They could do an extension with (Alex) DeBrincat, who’s one of their best players. He’s a UFA after the season. Are they going to do it with the new rules or the current rules? So, I’m curious to see that decision-making and how it gets affected. Obviously, they’ve got (Dylan) Larkin hovering above all of this, although they’ve now said he’ll be at camp even without the C.
But the thing for me is that teams try to hide these searches the best they can. Detroit’s no different than anybody else. It’s been difficult, challenging, a little bit more so to kind of figure out who their targets are and what kind of structure they’re looking at. I do think they’re looking at a data-driven person. I think that they would like to surround that person with some people that could help them with some of the things that they’re maybe not experts on.
But Jeff Greenberg, who’s the GM of the Tigers, he was a legitimate contender there. We all know he pulled himself out, and okay, and I’m trying to sit here and trying to figure out, okay, who’s the front runner now? And to their credit, I would say because teams like to do this, the Red Wings have made it very hard to decipher. And I think the thing we’re trying to figure out right now is how important it is to Detroit to have this settled by the time camp opens this week.
NHL Rumors: How Does the Turmoil End with the Detroit Red Wings?
So I’m working on it. I’m trying to figure out more of it. I really thought Greenberg was a serious contender. The moment that he pulled himself out, I’ve had a more difficult time trying to figure out what they’re going to do, or if they would even do something as simple as make Shawn Horcoff the interim GM until they sort this all out.”
McCarthy: “Interesting. Yeah, there’s a lot of fronts on which they could deal in Detroit right now that you just referenced, and that you’d think they’d like to get a conclusion on. And without a manager in place, it becomes more difficult to get to those conclusions. So we’ll, we’ll see where it goes on Detroit.”
