Dallas Stars want to keep Jason Robertson
Over the summer, the Dallas Stars and forward Jason Robertson agreed to a one-year contract extension worth $12 million to avoid arbitration. Many wondered about his future, but as the process went on, both the team and player agreed it was best to sign the one-year deal and continue contract talks.
Both parties feel it is best to keep the relationship going, as Robertson is an important piece to the Dallas Stars. Given the money coming off the books next season, it will be easier to sign him when he becomes eligible on January 1st, especially now that they know his cap hit will be $113 million next season and $127.5 million by the 2028-29 season.
Dallas Stars General Manager Jim Nill joined SiriusXM NHL Network Radio on Tuesday with Steve Kouleas and Anthony Stewart. There, Nill was asked about keeping forward Jason Robertson long-term.

Steve Kouleas: “With Jim Nill, the general manager of the Dallas Stars, so the Jason Robertson situation. What can you tell us that we don’t know? He’s signed this year. I mean, we’ve seen Zach Werenski and possible moves, and we’ve seen offer sheets in Seattle and everything else. Your level of confidence will have another great year. He’s a phenomenal player, and you’ll be able to lock him up now, and he’ll be a star long term. Jim.”
Jim Nill: “That’s our plan. Jason’s a big part of our franchise. You know, we drafted, we developed him. He loves it here in Dallas. You know, we did sign the one-year deal, but I anticipate we’ll start negotiations sometime in December here. We can sign on January 1st, but our goal is to get him signed. I think that’s his goal too. He wants to be, I think he wants to finish his career with the Dallas Stars. So hopefully that’s something we’ll get accomplished and kind of move on from there.”
It’s clear that Nill’s goal hasn’t changed, doubling down on his stance from the summer and his position from early September when he joined Jamison Coyle, Cory Schneider, and Mike Rupp on NHL Network.

Jamison Coyle: “I want to ask you about Jason Robertson; we mentioned off the top. He’s re-signed to that one-year extension. Can you kind of take us inside those negotiations and how easy it went down, or how difficult it was from both sides?”
Jim Nill: “Well, it’s always going to be hard. You’re dealing with star players, and they deserve to get paid. And we’re trying to find the right number that makes it fit, so we can keep our team together. And so I don’t think you want to say it’s tough negotiations. It just takes time. It’s patience. It’s time, and until you hit deadlines, nothing really happens.
NHL Rumors: The Plan from the Dallas Stars to Keep Jason Robertson Long-Term
In the end, Jason may file for arbitration, which gives you a deadline, which is probably the best thing for both parties. And so we’re able to get that deal done, and then, moving forward, our plan is to try to get them signed here this season, sometime before he comes to UFA.”
He wants to keep Jason Robertson with the Dallas Stars and make him a lifer, similar to Jamie Benn. The Stars drafted and developed Robertson. Robertson knows his value and wants to be with the Stars. If he didn’t, he would have signed an offer sheet or signed an extension as part of a trade with Seattle, St. Louis, Pittsburgh, or other teams pursuing him in the summer.
It’s clear he wants to be in Dallas. It is just coming to the terms of an agreement.
