Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are heading into a crucial phase as they search for a new head coach ahead of the IPL 2027 season. Stephen Fleming, who shared a long and highly successful association with the five-time champions, has parted ways with the franchise and is set to take up a coaching role with the England men’s cricket team. Given the strength and longevity of the CSK-Fleming partnership, replacing him will be a difficult challenge for the franchise. While several names have emerged in the rumour mill, CSK are yet to officially confirm their next head coach. Amid the uncertainty, former Australia opener Matthew Hayden has offered his opinion on who could be the ideal candidate for the demanding role.
Matthew Hayden names ideal candidate to coach CSK
Hayden believes former India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik could be a strong choice to succeed Fleming. The Australian feels Karthik’s connection with Chennai makes him particularly suited to a franchise that has always placed considerable value on its identity and bond with the city. Karthik was born in Chennai and represented Tamil Nadu in domestic cricket, giving him a natural connection with the region. According to Hayden, that local understanding could prove valuable in a head coach’s role, especially at a franchise as deeply rooted in its home city as CSK.
“There are names that have been mentioned; one of them was Dinesh Karthik, who I think is probably ready to take on that kind of role. I think it’s important to have a local coach,” Hayden said in an interaction with Sportstar.
The former Australian opener also acknowledged that several IPL franchises have preferred international coaches. However, he believes CSK could benefit from appointing someone who understands the culture and character surrounding the team.
“I know that a lot of franchises do go for international coaches, but I feel like the head coach role of a franchise as big as CSK should have that kind of local touch, even Chennai touch, which is why I thought Dinesh would be perfect,” he added.
Karthik’s recent involvement in cricket beyond his playing career has also strengthened his credentials as a potential coach. His experience across domestic cricket, international cricket and the IPL could give him a broad understanding of the modern game and the demands placed on players.

CSK hope to turn fortunes around under new coach
Whoever takes over will inherit a CSK side that needs a significant turnaround. The franchise has experienced a sharp decline in results since winning the IPL title in 2023. In IPL 2024, CSK finished fifth after collecting seven victories from 14 matches, narrowly missing out on the playoffs. Their fortunes worsened dramatically in 2025, when they ended the campaign at the bottom of the points table with only four wins from 14 games.
The 2026 season did not bring the desired revival either. CSK finished eighth with 12 points from 14 matches and missed the playoffs for a third consecutive season. The new coach will therefore face the task of rebuilding confidence while maintaining the culture that has made CSK one of the most successful teams in IPL history. Whether the franchise ultimately follows Hayden’s suggestion and turns to Karthik remains to be seen, but the search for Fleming’s successor is likely to be one of the biggest talking points ahead of IPL 2027.
