NEED TO KNOW

  • Mitchel Musso described his bond with Miley Cyrus and Emily Osment as inseparable during their time on Hannah Montana
  • Musso shared that the trio spent time together off the set, snowboarding and hanging out in Tennessee
  • He expressed admiration for Cyrus, calling her “one of the coolest people” and like “a sister” to him

Mitchel Musso says he, Miley Cyrus and Emily Osment were three peas in a pod while filming Hannah Montana.

Musso, 34, played one of Miley Stewart's (a.k.a. Hannah Montana) besties, Oliver Oken, in the Disney Channel show, which first aired in 2006.

Speaking on the Joe Vulpis Podcast, Musso said of the trio, "This is our middle school, high school, college — we graduated a class of three."

"It was just me, Miley, and Emily, right?" he added. "So, it was everything to us. If we weren't on set together, we were out snowboarding together. We were hanging out in Tennessee at the house."

"We were … just never wanted to be apart. You know what I mean?" he continued. "We had so many inside jokes. It was our little, it was our clique, you know, us three."

Talking about his relationship with Cyrus elsewhere in the podcast, he noted that "she's one of the coolest people."

"One of the most impressive people and watching her career…it's not like I talk to Miley every single day, but you know the once or twice a year that I do get to speak with her, she's my sister, you know what I mean? I'd do anything for Miles," he said.

However, both Osment and Musso were absent from the Hannah Montana 20th Anniversary Special, which aired in March 2026.

Musso said the special — which included Cyrus appearing as herself while performing some of the songs from the show, as well as an interview with her and Alex Cooper — "wasn't presented correctly" and he would have preferred to step back into the character alongside his costars and put together an actual episode or even movie.

"It's too long of a wait to do it in a way that isn't even close to, in my opinion, correct," Musso, who took a step back from Hollywood 10 years ago, said.

“The kid in me was banking on it, like ‘I can't wait for us to all be on set again,'” he told Vulpis. “And it just didn't work out that way.”

Although Osment and Musso missed the anniversary special, they both posted about the milestone online.

Hannah Montana changed my life, it gave me a lifelong respect for this medium of comedy, it taught me discipline, patience, timing and respect working in an adult space so young," Osment wrote in a March 23 post on Instagram.

She noted that she has "met thousands" of Hannah Montana fans over the years, even those who "now have children watching this show."

“I can't tell you what your sweet messages mean to me and how lucky I feel to have been [a part] of this once in a generation goliath of a television show," she continued. "Thank you for letting me into your living rooms and I hope to still be there many years from now. Would never be where I am without you guys, working on another beautiful show I love so dearly. With all my heart, THANK YOU! ♥️ Lilly.”
