Rohit Sharma had an unexpected moment during the first ODI between India and West Indies at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday, September 27. The veteran opener stumbled near the boundary while making his way back towards the dugout after being near the advertising boards.

The incident came during India’s eight-wicket victory over West Indies, in which Rohit scored 32 off 35 balls. Later in the day, another video involving Rohit emerged after he slipped while getting down from the team bus outside the team hotel. No injury was reported from either incident.

Watch: Rohit Sharma stumbles and nearly falls

The first incident occurred during the opening ODI while Rohit Sharma was near the boundary advertising boards. He was wearing India’s practice kit and shorts, along with flip-flops, when he appeared to get his foot caught on something while walking back towards the dugout.

Rohit briefly lost his balance and stumbled forward. An Indian support staff member immediately moved towards him and offered assistance, but the former India captain managed to stay on his feet and continued towards the dugout.

The moment came after Rohit had already made an impact with the bat during India’s chase. Opening alongside Shubman Gill, he provided India with a brisk start before being dismissed for 32. India eventually chased down West Indies’ 296-run target in 41.4 overs, with Virat Kohli scoring an unbeaten 139 and Gill making 110.

Rohit Sharma’s dismissal came in the 12th over when Alzarri Joseph found the edge of his attempted flick. Rohit mistimed the shot towards deep midwicket, where Jewel Andrew completed the catch.

There was another scare for Rohit after the match. As the Indian team returned to the hotel following their victory, he slipped while coming down the stairs of the team bus. Support staff and security personnel quickly moved in to help him. A video of the incident showed Rohit getting back up, with no confirmed injury reported afterwards.

Let’s not get too greedy now – Dinesh Karthik on Rohit Sharma’s flop show in 1st ODI vs West Indies

Rohit’s 32-run dismissal also prompted discussion about whether he should have converted his start into a bigger score. However, former India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik urged viewers not to overanalyse the innings.

Rohit had played positively in the powerplay and helped India reach 70 without loss after 10 overs. Karthik pointed out that the opener had contributed to the team’s strong start and that his dismissal came while attempting one of his familiar shots. Speaking on Cricbuzz, Karthik said:

“He batted well till he lasted; let’s not get too greedy now. One opener got a hundred, the No.3, the best in the world, got a hundred. Rohit Sharma batted really well; I mean, the shot he got out to, it is a shot that he plays really well. If I were with Rohit Sharma, I would tell him that you tried it 2-3 times; you did not connect at all. But it is Rohit Sharma. I know that he is kind of a guy who will be very sure of what he is doing on a cricket field,” Dinesh Karthik said on Cricbuzz.

“He will go look back on what he did; it could be something as simple as the weight going a touch too much on the off side, a small little technical thing. Once he gets that right, I am sure he will get going,” he added.

I think everyone should enjoy Rohit and Virat’s batting – Ajinkya Rahane

Former India batter Ajinkya Rahane also called for appreciation of Rohit and Virat Kohli while the two senior batters continue playing ODI cricket for India.

Rahane pointed out that Rohit is usually confident when a bowler offers him a delivery on his pads. According to him, the experienced opener is unlikely to become overly cautious after one dismissal and will continue backing his natural game.

“If you bowl the same delivery to Rohit Sharma in the next match, he must be like, ‘I will hit it for a six’. He is that confident. I think everyone should enjoy Rohit and Virat’s batting. I know fans have different expectations, but as long as they are playing, let them just enjoy,” Ajinkya Rahane said on Cricbuzz.
