Schools and colleges to remain closed on May 28 in West Bengal

The West Bengal government has revised the official holiday schedule for Bakra Eid (Eid-ul-Adha) 2026. According to the updated notification, May 28, 2026, will now be observed as the public holiday for Eid-ul-Adha across the state.The decision was taken following revised moon-sighting reports and updated Islamic calendar observations followed in different parts of the country.The state government has also withdrawn its earlier holiday notification. Previously, holidays had been announced for May 26 and May 27, 2026, under the earlier schedule.However, as per the latest directive, government offices, educational institutions, and other establishments covered under the notification will remain open and fully functional on both May 26 and May 27.Officials stated that the earlier order, issued in November 2025, had declared May 26 as the holiday before Eid and May 27 for Bakrid celebrations. Following the revised moon-sighting updates, the holiday schedule has now been modified under Section 25 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881.With the latest revision, Bakra Eid celebrations in West Bengal will now officially be observed on May 28, 2026.

Bakra Eid 2026: State-wise holiday dates

Different states have announced different holiday dates for Eid-ul-Adha based on local moon-sighting observations:

  • Delhi will observe the Bakra Eid holiday on May 28, 2026
  • Uttar Pradesh has declared holidays on May 27 and May 28, 2026
  • Karnataka, Gujarat, and Telangana will also observe the holiday on May 28, 2026
  • Haryana will mark the holiday on May 27, 2026
  • Jammu and Kashmir will observe Eid celebrations on May 27, 2026

Students, and parents are advised to follow official notifications issued by their respective state governments for the latest updates regarding public holidays and office schedules.
