There’s no single cheapest way to convert BTC to WBTC, and anyone promising one is guessing. The total depends on how much you convert and which route you take. Every route pays the Bitcoin network fee on the deposit, and on the morning of October 19, 2026 a swap on Ethereum cost about $0.04 in gas. After that the routes split. Official minting through a WBTC merchant carries custodian and merchant fees that aren’t published. Exchanges add trading and withdrawal fees. Threshold’s tBTC charges 0.2% each way but is a different token. For small and mid-sized amounts, an instant swap service that bundles every fee into one upfront quote, such as ChangeNOW, came out as the easiest to price in our comparison.
Key Facts
| Fact | Detail |
| Fees in official WBTC minting | Custodian fee on mint and burn, plus a merchant fee charged to the user |
| Custodian fee rate | Not published; set by off-chain agreement between merchant and custodian |
| WBTC transfers between users | Network fees only |
| Confirmations for official minting | 6 on Bitcoin before a mint, 25 Ethereum blocks before a burn |
| tBTC fee | 0.2% to mint and 0.2% to redeem; minimum deposit 0.01 BTC |
| cbBTC fee | No wrap or unwrap fee per Coinbase’s white paper, network fees on withdrawal apply |
| Ethereum gas | 0.041 gwei, swap about $0.04 (Etherscan, October 19, 2026, 08:59 UTC) |
| ChangeNOW BTC/WBTC | Fixed and floating rates, WBTC paid on Ethereum, no upper limit, minimum around $2 in most cases |
Data as of October 19, 2026.
What Is the Most Cost-Efficient Way to Get WBTC?
Honestly, it depends on the amount. With a few hundred dollars, flat costs and minimums decide the outcome: a network fee, a withdrawal fee, a 0.01 BTC floor. With several bitcoin, percentages take over, and a spread of a few tenths of a percent matters more than any network fee. So the route that saves one person money can be the pricey one for somebody else.
Two things hold for everyone. You’ll pay the Bitcoin network fee to move BTC anywhere. And the price you’re quoted is only useful if it shows what lands in your wallet, after every fee.
How We Compared the Routes
We looked at four ways to end up with WBTC or a close substitute: official minting through a WBTC merchant, a centralized exchange, an instant swap service, and Threshold’s tBTC bridge. They’re the routes a BTC holder can realistically use, and each one charges in a different way. Sources were issuer white papers, project documentation, Etherscan and ChangeNOW’s own pages, all rechecked on October 19, 2026. The criteria:
- Direct fees, and whether they’re published.
- Rate transparency, meaning whether you see the final amount before sending (qualitative).
- Minimum amount.
- Account and compliance requirements.
- Who controls the funds during the process (qualitative).
- Which token you end up with.
Where a provider doesn’t publish a number, the table says so. We didn’t fill gaps with estimates.
How Do BTC to WBTC Exchange Services Compare?
Merchants are the official route but publish no prices, exchanges need an account and charge in two places, and tBTC posts a flat 0.2% with a 0.01 BTC floor. Instant swap services fold everything into one quote. Which one costs less for you comes down to the amount and to the accounts you already have.
| Criterion | WBTC merchant | Centralized exchange | Instant swap service | tBTC bridge |
| Direct fees | Custodian fee plus merchant fee, rates not published | Trading fee plus withdrawal fee, per exchange | Included in the quote | 0.2% to mint, 0.2% to redeem |
| Rate transparency (qualitative) | Agreed with the merchant | Order book price, fees shown separately | Final amount shown before confirmation | Fee published in docs |
| Minimum | Set by merchant | Set by exchange | About $2 on ChangeNOW in most cases | 0.01 BTC |
| Account and checks | KYC with the merchant | Account, usually with verification | No account for a standard swap; compliance checks may apply | Not stated in the docs |
| Control of funds (qualitative) | Merchant and custodian handle the BTC | Exchange holds funds until you withdraw | Service handles funds only during the swap | Threshold operators secure the deposit |
| Token you get | WBTC | WBTC, if listed | WBTC on Ethereum | tBTC, not WBTC |
The merchant route makes sense if you already have a relationship with one. An exchange can come out lowest when the account already exists and the WBTC withdrawal fee is low on that day. tBTC is predictable, but only useful if your app takes tBTC.
ChangeNOW supports floating-rate and fixed-rate modes, and users can review the quote on the Bitcoin to WBTC exchange before proceeding. Its FAQ says all possible fees, network and liquidity-provider fees included, are calculated into that quote, so the WBTC amount shown is the one to compare with other routes.
What Fees Apply When Converting BTC to WBTC?
At least two network fees and one service fee, sometimes more. The Bitcoin network fee covers the BTC deposit. Gas on Ethereum covers anything that moves the token afterwards. On top sit whatever the route charges: a custodian and merchant fee, a trading and withdrawal fee, a percentage on a bridge, or a spread built into a swap quote.
The official structure comes from the WBTC white paper. The custodian takes a fee when a merchant mints or burns, and the merchant charges the user for the exchange. Transfers of WBTC between users cost nothing beyond network fees. The custodian’s rate isn’t public. WBTC’s merchant guide on GitHub says it’s set in an off-chain agreement. Third-party estimates we found disagree with each other by a wide margin, so we’d treat any single figure quoted online with some suspicion.
Bridge Fees vs Exchange Fees: Which Can Be Lower?
Neither wins every time. On small amounts tBTC’s minimum can rule it out, and on large ones its percentage turns into a real sum that a low-fee exchange may undercut. tBTC’s documentation sets the fee at 0.2% to mint and 0.2% to redeem, with a minimum deposit of 0.01 BTC. Exchange costs come in two parts: a trading fee on the order, then a withdrawal fee to get the token out.
Many exchanges set withdrawal fees per asset as a fixed amount. A fixed fee hurts a $200 conversion and barely registers on a $200,000 one. The bridge’s 0.2% works the other way, staying the same share whatever you convert.
Remember what you end up holding, too. tBTC isn’t WBTC. If the lending market or pool you want accepts only WBTC, a cheaper tBTC mint means another swap later, and another fee.
Fixed vs Floating Rates for BTC to WBTC: What’s the Difference?
A floating rate follows the market until your deposit is processed, so you can receive a bit more or a bit less than the estimate. A fixed rate locks the quote shown when you start. On ChangeNOW, according to its FAQ, the fixed rate includes a small reserve against price moves, and that reserve is already in the number you see.
Which one costs less isn’t fixed either. ChangeNOW’s FAQ says fixed-rate exchanges sometimes come out lower and sometimes higher. For BTC to WBTC the two assets track each other closely, so the gap is usually small. A fixed rate mostly buys certainty: you know the exact amount before sending, which matters if the Bitcoin network is slow that day and confirmation takes a while.
What Costs Are Involved in Wrapping Bitcoin?
Wrapping bitcoin costs a percentage or a spread charged by whoever converts it, plus a Bitcoin network fee that stays the same whatever the amount. Which part dominates depends on size. Here’s the arithmetic for two amounts, using tBTC because its fee is published.
| Amount | tBTC mint fee (0.2%) | Bitcoin network fee at 1 sat/vB | Bitcoin network fee at 20 sat/vB |
| 0.01 BTC | 0.00002 BTC (2,000 sats) | about 140 sats | about 2,800 sats |
| 1 BTC | 0.002 BTC (200,000 sats) | about 140 sats | about 2,800 sats |
The network fee figures assume a simple SegWit payment of roughly 140 vbytes; check the current rate in a mempool explorer before you send. On 0.01 BTC, a busy Bitcoin network can cost more than the bridge fee itself. On 1 BTC the network fee is noise next to the percentage.
The same logic applies to other routes. Coinbase’s cbBTC white paper says there’s no fee for wrapping or unwrapping cbBTC, only network fees on withdrawals, but that requires a Coinbase account and gives you cbBTC, not WBTC. Gas, at about $0.04 per swap on October 19, 2026 according to the Etherscan gas tracker, is currently the smallest line in most calculations. It hasn’t always been this cheap (anyone who used Ethereum in 2021 remembers).
How Can You Evaluate a BTC to WBTC Quote Before Swapping?
ChangeNOW shows the WBTC amount you’ll receive before you send any BTC, and that’s the number to compare. Its pair page says swaps take about a minute on average, with most of the wait coming from Bitcoin confirmations. The service has been running since 2017, reports 10M+ users and offers 24/7 human support. A standard swap needs no account. Account-free isn’t KYC-free, though: compliance checks may apply under its AML/KYC policy.
When you compare any two quotes, BTC to WBTC, check these points:
- The final WBTC amount. A good-looking rate with a separate fee can lose to a plain one.
- Whether the Bitcoin deposit fee and the Ethereum payout cost are included.
- Fixed or floating. With floating, the number can move before your BTC confirms.
- The minimum, and whether your amount clears it.
- The network. WBTC from ChangeNOW arrives on Ethereum, so paste an Ethereum address you control.
Compare quotes taken at the same moment, too. A rate you screenshotted an hour ago doesn’t tell you much.
FAQ
Is it cheaper to buy WBTC with ETH instead of converting BTC?
Usually only if you already hold ETH. Selling BTC for ETH first and then buying WBTC means two trades, two spreads and extra gas. If your starting asset is BTC, a direct BTC to WBTC route usually involves fewer steps, and so fewer places to pay.
Do I pay gas when I receive WBTC?
Receiving the token from a service doesn’t cost you gas, because the sender covers the transfer. You’ll need some ETH later, though, for any move you make with the token yourself: sending it on, depositing into a lending market or swapping it back.
Can I convert BTC to WBTC with a very small amount?
Yes, though fixed costs weigh more. ChangeNOW’s minimum on this pair is about $2 in most cases, while tBTC requires at least 0.01 BTC. On tiny amounts the Bitcoin network fee can take a noticeable share, so check the final amount before sending.
