A Florida woman was found guilty of vehicular homicide and reckless driving with serious bodily injury in the death of her boyfriend.

Leigha Mumby, 25, was convicted on Wednesday, Oct. 14 after a two-day trial in connection with the death of 22-year-old Daniel Waterman, the Office of the State Attorney, Seventh Judicial Circuit of Florida said.

Mumby was crying as she was ushered out of the Flagler County courtroom, the Daytona Beach News-Journal reported, noting that it took the jury one hour and 11 minutes to reach a verdict.

According to prosecutors, Mumby was arguing with Waterman when the crash occurred on Feb. 9, 2025.

Prosecutors said she was driving 94 mph on Interstate 95 in Flagler County when “she suddenly turned the steering wheel to the left, causing the vehicle to veer off the highway and crash into several trees,” per a news release.

He died from pneumonia eight months later on Oct. 8.

During closing arguments, Assistant State Attorney Melissa Clark said Mumby found out that morning that she was pregnant with Waterman’s child and then discovered Waterman had been texting another woman, Flaglerlive.com reported.

“She’s so furious she calls her best friend to vent about it, screaming about Daniel texting with another woman. And when her best friend doesn’t react the way she likes, she abruptly hangs up. That was Leigha Mumby’s demeanor at the time of the crash,” Clark said, per the outlet.

Mumby’s defense attorney Reid Hart said that in order to believe the state’s account of the crash “you would have to believe that Miss Mumby was on a suicide mission.”

“There’s absolutely zero evidence or reasons to believe that she was in a place where she was going to put all of their lives, including hers and that of her own unborn child, at risk of serious violent harm or death,” he said, according to Flaglerlive.com. “Her efforts to avoid the crash, as soon as that input gets made, illustrate that she never intended for that to happen in the first place.”

A sentencing date has yet to be scheduled.
