Authorities in Texas have arrested a man accused of gunning down two brothers as they backed their car into the driveway of their own home.

Maliki Perales, 11, and Dravyn Quiroz, 20, were fatally shot outside their San Antonio residence on Wednesday, Aug. 5, as they reversed their car into the driveway, the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office said at a press briefing.

They were not named by police but have been identified by family in local media outlets News 4 SA and KENS 5.

Daniel Antonio Perez, 38, has been arrested on several charges including capital murder, according to online court records reviewed by PEOPLE.

Police responding to a report of a shooting found the brothers in a “highly dynamic scene,” Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said at Wednesday’s briefing.

The sheriff added that Perez left his home with a gun and shot the brothers without provocation. He was arrested nearby after allegedly fleeing the scene.

Salazar said security video reviewed by police showed two young female relatives of Perez trying to restrain him as he left the home with a gun.

Perez’s family has since told police he had undiagnosed mental health issues, Salazar told the media.

“Unbeknownst to [the victims’ family], they had a ticking time bomb right across the street,” Salazar said.

He added there had been no prior friction between the two households and there was no indication of any provocation leading up to Wednesday’s shooting.

Two other siblings in the same family were also shot and survived, Salazar said.

In an interview shared online by News 4 SA, the victims’ bereaved father is seen breaking down as he speaks of the tragedy.

“He’s an all-star kid, bringing kindness, bringing happiness to everybody,” Andrew Perales told reporters through tears.

“My boys were awesome. I’m proud of them,” he said. “I don’t know how I’m going to carry on.”

Perez called 911 after the shooting and told police he had shot the victims, authorities say. It wasn’t immediately clear whether that was the call that initially brought deputies to the scene.

Online court records reviewed by PEOPLE show Perez has been charged with capital murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and aggravated assault causing bodily injury.

The records did not show plea or attorney information; he is being held on a $500,000 bond, according to the online court docket.
