Dave Pagnotta of The Fourth Period joined Sirius XM NHL Network Radio with Gord Stellick and Scott Laughlin on Tuesday. There, he was asked about the Detroit Red Wings, when they will hire a general manager, and how that will affect players like Simon Edvinsson, Alex DeBrincat, Dylan Larkin, and others.

Time is Ticking Away for the Detroit Red Wings
Dave Pagnotta: “Yeah, I mean, they’ve gone through, I think, their first couple of rounds of interviews, wanting to narrow things down. I mean, they obviously want to have somebody in place ASAP at this stage. But I’ve got to imagine that this week we’re going to hear a little bit more as to who’s jumping in.
Now, they had their internal meetings with some of their internal candidates. They’ve looked outside the box a little bit, as I said. I think they wanted to narrow things down over the last couple of rounds here because, yeah, there is a lot of work.
There’s the free agents. There’s activity, and not just with the guys we already know. But one guy we haven’t talked much is Alex DeBrincatt. He’s entering the final year of his deal. Now, when Yzerman was still there was that he was looking for big money on an extension as well. The GM will determine exactly what his fate is going to be, but there’s, there’s more than just Edvinsson and Larkin. A lot more questions that need to be answered with respect to the Red Wings and what they’re going to do this season.
NHL Rumors: How Does the Turmoil End with the Detroit Red Wings?
I listened to you guys earlier, Gord, I think you were mentioning how like we may see the Wings near the bottom of the standings in the Atlantic. And depending on what the return is going to be for Larkin, and what that outcome ultimately is going to be, plus some of the other elements of that team. There’s no (Patrick) Kane; he’s back in Chicago. This could be a bit of a rough ride for the Wings this season.”
NHLRumors.com Note: The Detroit Red Wings, according to reports, have been winding down their GM search. We know Jeff Greenberg is out of the running. But where does that leave Brett Peterson, Jeff Kealty, Scott White, Darren Yorke, Tyler Dellow, and other potential candidates for the job? At some point, they will want these guys back. Does that mean, as has been suggested, that Shawn Horcoff could be the interim GM until they hire someone?
Why the Trade Request from Connor Hellebuyck Differs from Dylan Larkin
Simon Edvinsson is reporting to camp without a contract. Whether he got an offer sheet is debatable. Other teams were interested, but he chose to stay in Detroit, since he could have left by now if he wanted to. But he wants to be with the Red Wings. Alex DeBrincat confirmed multiple reports that he wants to stay in Detroit and likes it there, but with the way the market is going, he will get close to $11 million on his next deal.
The Red Wings have to figure out other players on their roster. Justin Faulk and John Gibson are also eligible for extensions. They have a lot of work to do, plus they need to figure out what happens with Dylan Larkin.
