NEED TO KNOW

  • Celebrities and fans alike have mourned the loss of two major stars this week — Dolly Parton and Tim Curry
  • Jenifer Lewis, who worked with both on the same project, 1999’s Jackie’s Back, shared tributes to each of them
  • Both Parton and Curry died at the age of 80 on Aug. 25, though fans didn’t learn of Curry’s death until the following day

Jenifer Lewis is remembering the cast of a special film as she mourns two of her costars.

The actress, 69, starred in Jackie’s Back, a 1999 Lifetime mockumentary comedy about a ‘70s diva staging a comeback while filmmaker Edward Whatsett St. John (Tim Curry) follows along. The film also starred Whoopi Goldberg and Loretta Devine and featured tons of cameos, including one from Dolly Parton.

Lewis first commented on Parton’s death at age 80, sharing a recent get-together where the two spoofed a moment from the film. In the caption, Lewis wrote, “@dollyparton was a general in the army of LOVE. She was the best of us. Dolly loved ALL of humanity and I will always love you. 🕊️❤️.”

She later shared another video, a birthday message from Parton, shot between her filming commercials. In that caption, Lewis shared, “@dollyparton was sweet as cotton candy and Christmas morning. She loved and nurtured the WHOLE WORLD.”

The following day, the world learned of the death of Curry, who also died on Aug. 25 at the age of 80. On Thursday, Aug. 26, Lewis shared her fond memories of her Jackie’s Back costar. She wrote, “@officialtimcurry was a class act!!! He was so talented, funny, and extremely patient with my ‘crazy ass’ during the filming of Jackie’s Back. You gave the world so much.”

Sharing a scene from the film in a second post, Lewis wrote, “RIP, @officialtimcurry . I had an absolute blast working with one of the greatest.”

Following the news of the two stars’ deaths, fans of entertainment have mourned and celebrated the lives they led. Though few had the fortune of working with both, another touching tribute to the two stars came from The Muppets.

Sharing a photo of Parton smiling wide with Miss Piggy, the account shared, “There will never be another quite like Dolly Parton. She was the ultimate singer, songwriter, actress, performer, and philanthropist. She filled the world with light and we are so grateful for every second we got to spend with her onstage and off. 🦋”

The next day, they shared a photo of Curry as Long John Silver in Muppet Treasure Island. In the caption, the account wrote, “Few humans have earned the title of honorary Muppet more than the legendary Tim Curry. As a performer, he was unparalleled – witty, charming, unnerving, and deeply funny. We will always consider it one of our greatest treasures to have been part of Long John Silver’s crew. Thank you for everything, Tim.”
