Indian wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson recently gave fans a glimpse into the inspirations behind his cricketing journey during a fun rapid-fire interview. Taking part in Star Sports’ popular Q20s (20 Quickfire Questions) segment, Samson answered several light-hearted questions before revealing the names of the cricketers he admired the most while growing up.
Over the years, Samson has carved out a successful career with his elegant strokeplay and calm temperament. While his rise to international cricket has been filled with challenges, the Kerala batter has often acknowledged the role played by some of the game’s greatest icons in shaping his outlook, both on and off the field.
Sanju Samson opens up about the legends who inspired him
During the rapid-fire session, when asked which cricketer was his biggest hero growing up, Samson said, “Growing up, it was Sachin sir, and then Mahi bhai as well.”
Samson’s admiration for Sachin Tendulkar dates back to his childhood, with the batting legend inspiring him to fall in love with cricket. As his career progressed, that admiration evolved into a mentor-mentee relationship. During difficult phases of his international career, Tendulkar regularly stayed in touch with Samson, offering guidance and helping him remain mentally strong through setbacks.
The relationship became even more special after India’s triumph at the 2026 T20 World Cup. Samson later revealed that Tendulkar had consistently checked on him throughout the tournament, motivating him behind the scenes. Following India’s title-winning campaign, an emotional Samson personally thanked his childhood hero for the unwavering support.
Samson also credited former India captain MS Dhoni as one of his biggest inspirations. As a young wicketkeeper-batter, he had the opportunity to closely observe Dhoni after receiving his maiden India call-up in 2014. Spending time alongside one of the game’s greatest leaders helped Samson understand the importance of composure, self-belief and handling pressure.
The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) legend’s encouraging words during Samson’s early IPL years also left a lasting impression. Rather than focusing on failures, Dhoni advised the youngster to enjoy the game and maintain perspective, a lesson Samson has often spoken about while reflecting on his own career.

Samson enjoying the best phase of his cricketing career
The revelations come during what has arguably been the finest period of Samson’s cricketing journey. After joining CSK ahead of IPL 2026, the stylish batter enjoyed an outstanding campaign, scoring 477 runs in 14 innings at an average of 43.36 and an impressive strike rate of 165.62, including two centuries.
He carried that momentum into the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, where he delivered several match-winning performances for India. His memorable knocks against the West Indies, England and New Zealand played a crucial role in India’s title-winning campaign, with Samson eventually being named the Player of the Tournament.
From idolising two Indian greats as a youngster to becoming one of the country’s biggest match-winners himself, Samson’s journey reflects the lasting influence that legendary figures can have on the next generation of cricketers.
