One person is dead and several are hospitalized after two planes collided on a runway at Scottsdale Airport in Arizona on Monday, Feb. 10. Several others were also injured.
At 2:39 p.m. local time, a midsize business jet that was arriving at the airport collided with another business jet that was “parked on private property,” Kelli Kuester, aviation planning and outreach coordinator at the Scottsdale Airport, said in a statement shared with PEOPLE.
The runway is closed “for the foreseeable future,” said Kuester.
Five people were involved in the incident, with one being pronounced dead on arrival, Scottsdale Fire Department spokesperson Capt. Dave Folio said in a news briefing published by Fox 10 Phoenix. Two people were transported to trauma centers, and another was taken to a local hospital in stable condition. The fifth person was still trapped in one of the airplanes at the time of the press conference.
“We’re doing everything we can to extricate and save the one soul that’s still on board,” he added. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to everybody involved in this.”
Folio noted that authorities arrived on the scene just moments after the incident and requested additional alarms and hazmat units to evaluate the area and surrounding buildings. Authorities “got an all clear” of the nearby structures, Folio said.
The Scottsdale Airport previously said via X that the incident occurred on Runway 21.
