    The second match of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 saw an exhilarating contest as Delhi Capitals  secured a thrilling 2-wicket victory over Mumbai Indians at Kotambi Stadium. A closely fought battle witnessed standout performances from both sides, but Delhi Capitals ultimately held their nerve to chase down a challenging target.

    Mumbai Indians struggle despite Nat Sciver Brunt’s heroics

    Opting to bowl first after winning the toss, Delhi Capitals made early inroads into Mumbai Indians’ batting lineup. Opener Hayley Matthews fell for a duck, and Yastika Bhatia managed only 11 off 9 balls before being dismissed.

    However, England’s star all-rounder Natalie Sciver Brunt played a sensational knock, anchoring the innings with a superb 80 off 59 deliveries, laced with 13 boundaries.

    Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur provided much-needed impetus, smashing 42 off just 22 balls, including four fours and three sixes.

    Despite their efforts, Mumbai Indians suffered a batting collapse in the final overs, losing their last five wickets for just 18 runs. Amelia Kerr (9 off 9) and Amanjot Kaur (7 off 7) offered brief support, but Delhi’s disciplined bowling attack restricted them to 164 all out in 19.1 overs.

    Annabel Sutherland was the pick of the bowlers for Delhi, claiming 3 wickets for 34 runs in her 3.1 overs. Veteran pacer Shikha Pandey was equally impressive, returning figures of 2 for 14 in her four-over spell. Alice Capsey and Minnu Mani also chipped in with crucial breakthroughs to keep Mumbai in check.

    Shafali Varma’s fireworks set the tone for Delhi Capitals

    Chasing 165 for victory, Delhi Capitals got off to a blazing start, courtesy of Shafali Verma’s explosive 43 off just 18 deliveries. Her aggressive strokeplay, featuring seven fours and two sixes, put Mumbai bowlers on the back foot.

    Meg Lanning (15 off 19) provided stability at the other end, but her departure triggered a brief collapse as Jemimah Rodrigues (2 off 5) and Annabel Sutherland (13 off 10) departed cheaply.

    Alice Capsey (16 off 18) and Niki Prasad (35 off 33) played sensible knocks to keep the chase on track.

    The equation came down to the wire in the final overs, with Sarah Bryce’s quickfire 21 off 10 proving crucial in swinging momentum towards Delhi. Radha Yadav’s late cameo (9 not out off 4) and Arundhati Reddy (2* off 1) ensured Delhi crossed the finish line in the final over, finishing at 165/8 in 20 overs.

    Mumbai Indians fought back valiantly with the ball, with Hayley Matthews (2/32) and Amelia Kerr (2/21) leading the charge. Shabnim Ismail and Natalie Sciver also claimed a wicket each, but the inability to contain Delhi’s lower-order hitters in the death overs cost them the match.
