HĹshi, a traÂdiÂtionÂal JapanÂese inn in KomatÂsu, Japan, holds the disÂtincÂtion of being the secÂond oldÂest hotel in the worldâand âthe oldÂest still runÂning famÂiÂly busiÂness in the world.â Built in 718 AD, HĹshi has been operÂatÂed by the same famÂiÂly for 46 conÂsecÂuÂtive genÂerÂaÂtions. Count them. 46 genÂerÂaÂtions.
Japan is a counÂtry with deep traÂdiÂtions. And when youâre born into a famÂiÂly thatâs the careÂtakÂer of a 1,300-year-old instiÂtuÂtion, you find yourÂself strugÂgling with issues most of us canât imagÂine. Thatâs parÂticÂuÂlarÂly true when youâre the daughÂter of the HĹshi famÂiÂly, a modÂern woman who wants to break free from traÂdiÂtion. And yet hisÂtoÂry and strong famÂiÂly expecÂtaÂtions keep callÂing her back.
The stoÂry of HĹshi Ryokan is poignantÂly told in a short docÂuÂmenÂtary above. It was shot in 2014 by the GerÂman filmÂmakÂer Fritz SchuÂmann.
