Stay-At-Home Mom Says Husband Is ‘Pressuring’ Her to Get a Job

A stay-at-home mother whose husband is “pressuring” her to get a job doesn’t see the value in doing so since their family is financially stable.

The mom of three kids explained on community forum Mumsnet that her partner wants to “accelerate” their savings by becoming a dual-income household  — but she laid out why this might not work.

“I am happy with our current arrangement: I am a stay-at-home-mother, a caregiver to my family and a local volunteer,” she wrote. “My husband earns a good wage and we have money left over each month.”

“I do the school runs and the children have a wonderful routine; I can also help friends and family with any ad hoc support,” she continued. “He wants me to contribute financially, but once you factor in a cleaner, the additional stress of working and arranging care, it hardly seems worth it.”

She emphasized, “I’ll be making slightly above minimum wage.”

In a Mumsnet poll where the mother asked if she was being unreasonable for not wanting to get a job, 81 percent of the nearly 3,000 voters as of May 1 chose the voting option of “You are being unreasonable.”

“Your kids are in school. Your cleaner cleans the house. He’s right,” one person replied, while another put things into perspective, commenting, “Millions of other people do it every day. Try it. You might like it.”

Others noted that having a cleaner is a “luxury” and not needed.

A third Mumsnet user responded, “If you expect another adult to fund your life then that adult has to be happy to do so — that adult is now not happy to do so, time to get applying for jobs.”
