South African phenom Dewald Brevis illuminated the Vitality T20 Blast, with an audacious no-look six that left the crowd at the St Lawrence Ground in Canterbury spellbound. While Hampshire ultimately fell to Kent by eight wickets, the 22-year-old’s moment of pure theatrical brilliance became the undeniable highlight of the afternoon.

Dewald Brevis’s audacious display amidst Hampshire’s struggles

Entering the fray at number five with Hampshire in a precarious position of 29 for 3 after just four overs, Brevis showcased why he is one of T20 cricket’s most exciting prospects. Partnering with Joe Weatherley, he helped stabilize the innings with a rapid 34-run stand. Brevis’s explosive cameo yielded 24 runs off just 18 deliveries, including three towering sixes. The shot that will be replayed for years to come arrived when he faced Australian pacer Wes Agar. With an extraordinary display of confidence and flair, Brevis deliberately turned his head away at the precise moment of contact, sending the ball soaring deep into the leg-side stands. The Canterbury faithful erupted, witnessing a stroke that seamlessly blended power, precision, and unadulterated swagger.

The audacious hit was more than just a testament to Brevis’s raw power; it underscored his burgeoning reputation for inventive and fearless strokeplay.

Though his innings was cut short by Matt Parkinson, it provided the much-needed impetus for Hampshire’s recovery. Joe Weatherley’s resilient unbeaten 63 off 46 balls, coupled with valuable contributions from James Fuller (27 off 17) and Benny Howell (23 off 14), propelled Hampshire to a competitive total of 177 for 7 from their allotted 20 overs.

Kent’s dominant chase overshadows Brevis’s brilliance

Despite Brevis’s fireworks, Hampshire’s bowlers struggled to defend the target. Kent, led by a dominant Zak Crawley, chased down the score with an over to spare, finishing on 181 for 2. For Hampshire, Chris Wood was the only bowler to claim wickets, picking up both of Kent’s dismissals.

Kent’s chase was spearheaded by a superb opening partnership. Daniel Bell-Drummond blazed 61 off 40 deliveries, adorned with four fours and four sixes. However, it was Zak Crawley who truly anchored the innings, smashing an unbeaten 75 from just 43 balls, featuring seven fours and three sixes, expertly guiding Kent towards a comfortable victory. Joe Denly provided the finishing touches with an unbeaten 21 off 16 balls.
