The cricketing landscape in Hyderabad has been thrown into disarray following the dramatic arrest of Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) President A Jagan Mohan Rao and four other senior officials by the Telangana CID. The high-profile detentions stem from a serious complaint lodged by Kavya Maran, owner of the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), alleging persistent blackmail and misconduct by the HCA leadership. This unprecedented development has sent shockwaves through the state’s sports administration and raised significant questions about the future of professional cricket in the region.
The controversy first surfaced during the 2025 IPL season in March, when SRH formally escalated their grievances to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the IPL Governing Council. In their detailed complaint, SRH accused HCA officials of relentlessly pressuring the franchise to provide an exorbitant number of complimentary match passes, far exceeding the stipulated quota. The complaint further elaborated on the alleged threats, stating that HCA officials warned of creating significant logistical and operational hurdles for the team playing at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium if their demands for extra tickets were not met. The gravity of these threats led SRH to issue a stern warning: if the alleged blackmail continued, the franchise would seriously consider relocating its home matches outside of Hyderabad. Recognizing the severe implications of such allegations, Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy promptly ordered a comprehensive investigation, which has now culminated in these arrests.
Key HCA members detained in the blackmailing case
The Telangana CID’s swift action resulted in the detention of five prominent figures within the Hyderabad Cricket Association. Those arrested include:
- A Jagan Mohan Rao: The incumbent President of the HCA, a position of significant influence in state cricket.
- C. Srinivas Rao: The Treasurer, responsible for the association’s financial dealings.
- Sunil Kanthe: The Chief Executive Officer, overseeing the day-to-day operations.
- Rajendra Yadav: The Secretary, a key administrative role within the HCA.
- G. Kavitha: Rajendra Yadav’s wife, whose involvement suggests a deeper network in the alleged misconduct.
These individuals now face a litany of serious charges, including financial irregularities, abuse of their official positions and institutional blackmail. The arrests underscore the state’s commitment to rooting out corruption and ensuring fair play, not just on the field but within the administrative structures governing the sport.

SRH’s stance on the ticket row
An official statement from Sunrisers Hyderabad, communicated to the BCCI, highlighted the escalating tension: “HCA’s repeated tactics are not just uncooperative, but amount to direct threats. If this continues, we’ll be forced to shift our matches out of Hyderabad.” This stark warning underscores the immense pressure the franchise was under. According to established IPL regulations, state cricket associations are entitled to a mere 5% of the total tickets as complimentary passes for their officials and guests. However, the HCA was allegedly demanding a significantly higher percentage, using coercive tactics when their demands were not fulfilled.
The ongoing investigation, now under the direct monitoring of the BCCI, suggests that this matter will not be easily dismissed.
