Google CEO Sundar Pichai emphasises in-person interviews: How AI is failing to pick the right talent

As AI continues to reshape recruitment, the limitations of algorithmic assessments are becoming increasingly apparent. Efficiency and speed, once hailed as the primary advantages of virtual interviews, now clash with the pressing need for authenticity and competence evaluation. Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, acknowledged this growing concern, stating on the Lex Fridman podcast in June: “We are making sure we’ll introduce at least one round of in-person interviews for people, just to make sure the fundamentals are there.” His remark signals a strategic recalibration that prioritizes human judgment over convenience.

The AI dilemma in technical hiring

Virtual interviews, particularly in software engineering, have become vulnerable to AI-assisted shortcuts. Candidates increasingly leverage AI to solve real-time coding challenges and problem-solving tasks, making it difficult for recruiters to assess genuine understanding. Internal reports at Google suggest that more than half of candidates may now use AI tools to bypass the intended rigor of technical evaluations.

Voices from within: Employees demand onsite assessments

The rise of AI-driven shortcuts has sparked internal debate at Google. During a February town hall, employees directly confronted leadership, according to audio records as reviewed by CNBC: “Can we get onsite job interviews back? There are many email threads about this topic. If budget is a constraint, can we get the candidates to an office or environment we can control?” This plea highlights a broader concern: Virtual convenience is undermining the accuracy of talent assessment.

    A hybrid path forward

Brian Ong, Google’s Vice President of Recruiting, acknowledged the challenges of integrating AI responsibly: “We definitely have more work to do to integrate how AI is now more prevalent in the interview process.” Pichai proposed a hybrid model to balance efficiency with integrity: “Given we all work hybrid, I think it’s worth thinking about some fraction of the interviews being in person. I think it’ll help both the candidates understand Google’s culture, and I think it’s good for both sides.” For students and early-career professionals, this indicates that demonstrating competence alone is insufficient—authentic engagement and cultural alignment are now equally critical.

    Industry-wide implications

Google’s move reflects a broader trend. Anthropic, Amazon, Cisco, McKinsey, and Deloitte are increasingly reintroducing in-person assessments or enforcing strict anti-AI policies. Anthropic now requires candidates to demonstrate “non-AI-assisted communication skills,” while Amazon mandates explicit acknowledgment that no unauthorized tools will be used. These measures underscore a universal truth: AI can facilitate recruitment, but it cannot replace the nuanced judgment of human evaluators.

    What candidates must know

For students and aspiring professionals, the evolving hiring landscape carries a clear message. Technical proficiency alone no longer guarantees success; candidates must also exhibit critical thinking, adaptability, and the ability to communicate authentically in person. Google’s renewed emphasis on face-to-face interviews signals that mastering fundamentals, rather than relying on AI shortcuts, will define the next generation of high-performing talent. The rise of AI has reshaped recruitment practices, yet it has also exposed their limitations. Sundar Pichai’s reaffirmation of in-person interviews is a reminder that while technology can streamline processes, only human interaction can reliably discern true capability and fit. In the age of AI, the human touch remains indispensable in identifying genuine talent.
