The cost of attending Indian Premier League (IPL) matches is set to rise after the central government revised GST rates for entertainment and sports events. Notably, the GST Council has moved IPL tickets into the highest taxation bracket, alongside luxury categories such as casinos and race clubs.

The Indian Premier League attracts massive crowds every season, with supporters attending stadiums across India to watch top players such as Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Jasprit Bumrah in action. However, fans will now have to pay higher costs for stadium entry, as ticket prices might be revised.

New GST Reforms Make Attending IPL Matches More Expensive

The ticket costs will increase for the Indian Premier League starting with the 2026 season. Notably, the government has placed high-profile sporting events under the 40% GST slab. IPL tickets had an earlier 28% GST, but fans will now face an additional 12% increase.

Under revised taxation, fans will pay significantly more at the ticket counter. For example, a ticket priced at ₹1,000 will now cost ₹1,400.

This increase is expected to affect supporters across all venues, regardless of category or location, as the entire tournament now falls within the higher tax bracket.

As the Indian Premier League remains India’s most lucrative cricket league and one of the biggest global sporting spectacles, the new GST regime is set to hit fans directly in their pockets. However, the change is unlikely to impact attendance in the stadiums.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman Announces Key GST Reforms

India’s Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman confirmed after the September 3 GST Council meeting that major changes have been made to the tax system.

“For all specified actionable claims, including betting, casinos, gambling, horse racing, lottery, and online money gaming, GST rate of 40% will apply. Admission to sporting events like IPL will attract 40% GST. However, this rate of 40% will not apply to admission to recognized sporting events,” a detailed statement in the circular released by the GST council on new reforms read.

“Admission to other sporting events, including recognised sporting events where the ticket price is not more than Rs. 500, continues to be exempt, and if the ticket price is more than Rs. 500, it continues to be taxed at the standard rate of 18%,” it further added.

International and Domestic Cricket Remain Under 18% Tax

The GST hike will not affect international or domestic cricket in India. Tickets for these matches will continue under the 18% tax rate.

The 40% slab applies only to the IPL and select high-profile events, making them costlier for fans. Meanwhile, sporting events with ticket prices below ₹500 remain exempt from GST.

India is set to play their next international match during the upcoming Asia Cup, starting on September 9 in the UAE. The Men in Blue will host a home Test series against the West Indies starting on October 2, 2025. Notably, the Indian Premier League will take place in the March–May window every year.
