England, led by Harry Brook, suffered back-to-back losses against South Africa in the three-match series on home soil. The Three Lions have slipped to eighth in the ICC ODI rankings, and their inconsistent performances in the format have raised concerns about automatic qualification for the 2027 World Cup.

England have struggled in ODIs in recent years. The 2019 World Cup champions have won only seven of 22 matches since the 2023 World Cup. They endured an early exit from the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Only Bangladesh have a worse winning rate among teams that qualified for the last World Cup.

South Africa Claim First ODI Series Win in England Since 1998

South Africa secured their first ODI series win in England since 1998. The Proteas took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series following a narrow five-run victory at Lord’s. England will take on South Africa in the third and final ODI at The Rose Bowl in Southampton on Sunday, September 7.

The English team had previously swept the West Indies in a three-match series under Brook’s captaincy in May. However, they are eighth in the ICC rankings, four points behind Afghanistan and 37 points behind India, raising concerns about their chances of automatic qualification for the 2027 World Cup.

England could face serious difficulty securing a direct spot in the next World Cup and need to address their ongoing issues in the 50-over format.

Hosts Qualify Automatically for 2027 World Cup, England Must Improve ODI Form

The 2027 World Cup will be expanded to 14 teams, compared to 10 in the previous two editions. The tournament format has changed: the 14 teams will be split into two groups of seven, with the top three from each group advancing to a Super Six stage.

South Africa and Zimbabwe, as hosts, will automatically qualify, while Namibia, not a full member nation, will need to earn their spot through the standard qualification pathway. The remaining eight top-ranked teams, excluding the hosts, will also secure automatic entry.

England have 18 months to improve their ODI performance and ICC ranking to ensure they stay comfortably above the cut-off for direct qualification.

England in Danger of Missing Automatic Qualification

England have 18 months to improve their ODI performance ahead of the 2027 World Cup. They will play three ODIs against No.2-ranked New Zealand away, followed by three matches in Sri Lanka, likely missing some frontline multi-format players due to the Ashes.

England’s next home summer will feature three ODIs against India, a tri-series in Pakistan, and a bilateral series against Australia. Every series before the 2027 World Cup qualification cutoff is against a top-six-ranked ODI team.

Meanwhile, teams below England in the rankings have comparatively easier fixtures. The West Indies will play Bangladesh twice and Afghanistan once, while Bangladesh have a series against Ireland and Zimbabwe.

Even if England drop out of the top eight by March 2027, the expanded 14-team format ensures they will likely participate in the World Cup, either directly or through the Cricket World Cup Qualifier.
