Linda McMahon advocates decentralised schools as US students struggle with literacy

The latest 2024 NAEP reading results reveal a sobering reality: American students are struggling like never before. Fourth graders’ scores dropped 2 points since 2022 and 5 points since 2019. Twelfth graders hit the lowest reading levels in the test’s 30-year history. Only one in three students meets grade-level proficiency, and more than a third of high school seniors can’t even clear the basic threshold. College readiness is a distant dream for most, with just 35% prepared for higher education. The data highlights a widening gap between high achievers and students falling behind—a gap that’s only getting bigger.

    Trillions spent, progress stalled

Despite $3 trillion poured into K-12 education over the last decade, the results show that money alone hasn’t solved America’s learning crisis. Experts point to shortened reading programs, distracted classrooms, rising absenteeism, and a lack of STEM engagement as critical factors dragging down achievement. Simply investing more funds, they argue, can’t fix structural weaknesses—what’s needed are innovative approaches that address the root causes of declining literacy.

McMahon’s bold plan: Power to parents and communities

Education Secretary Linda McMahon has been outspoken about the federal government’s limitations. Through X posts and public statements, she has championed returning control to parents, teachers, and local communities. McMahon believes that schools work best when families and local leaders can tailor curricula, funding, and policies to their unique needs. “Federal one-size-fits-all programs are failing our kids,” she wrote recently, striking a chord with reform-minded educators and parents alike.

    Trump’s push for educational freedom

The Trump administration has translated this vision into action. His executive order, “Expanding Educational Freedom and Opportunity for Families,” directs federal agencies to prioritise school choice and family-directed funding. Programs like Arizona’s Empowerment Scholarship Accounts (ESAs) let parents use public funds for homeschooling, tutoring, therapy, and private tuition, giving families direct control over their children’s education. Advocates argue this approach encourages innovation, accountability, and competition, offering students alternatives to underperforming public schools.

Cutting controversial grants: Back to basics

In a controversial move, the Department of Education canceled $226 million in grants under the Comprehensive Centers Program, citing concerns about ideological bias and “radical agendas” related to race and gender identity. Supporters claim this refocuses resources on core academic skills, ensuring that students spend more time on literacy and numeracy rather than divisive social debates. Critics, however, warn that such cuts could limit support for marginalised students and widen inequities.

    The debate over decentralisation

While advocates argue that local control can spark innovation, opponents warn it could create a patchwork of standards, leaving poorer districts behind. Striking the right balance between autonomy and equity is the challenge of the decade. Can communities innovate without sacrificing fairness? Can parents and teachers lead reform without leaving students behind? These questions now dominate the education conversation.

    Toward a new educational era

The 2024 NAEP results have ignited a national reckoning over how American kids learn. With federal policies showing limited impact, the push toward state-led, parent-driven education is gaining steam. Whether this model can close achievement gaps, restore rigor, and prepare students for the future remains uncertain—but one thing is clear: the conversation about American education is changing, fast.
