A shocking incident happened during the thrilling Asia Cup 2025 match between India and Sri Lanka, which saw the star all-rounder Dasun Shanaka escaping a run-out despite being out of the crease.

The Suryakumar Yadav-led India and Charith Asalanka-led Sri Lanka locked horns at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Friday, September 26.

Why wasn’t Dasun Shanaka given run out against India?

The battle between India and Sri Lanka turned out to be a nail-biting one, and it saw both teams finishing their 20 overs with identical scores of 202/5.

After 40 overs, the match entered the Super Over, where Arshdeep Singh showed his class and dismissed two Sri Lankan batters for just 2 runs, and India won the match on their first ball of the Super Over.

However, the first Super Over was filled with a huge controversy as Dasun Shanaka was not given run out despite being out of the crease when Sanju Samson hit the stumps.

On the fourth ball of the over, Arshdeep Singh bowled a yorker-length delivery outside off-stump to Dasun Shanaka, who tried to dig it, but missed, and the ball went past the outside edge.

He, for some reason, took off for a single, and Sanju Samson quickly fired a throw at the stumps to catch Shanaka out of the crease. The Indian players started walking off the field, thinking they had already taken two wickets, but that wasn’t the case, and the players were recalled.

This was because the on-field umpire actually gave out caught behind, and once the umpire makes his decision, the ball becomes dead; hence, the runout wasn’t considered.

Suryakumar Yadav was perplexed by the umpire’s decision and had a long chat with umpire Gazi Sohel, who explained to him that the first decision – in this case, the caught behind – always stands. Furthermore, Dasun Shanaka used a review, and on the replays, it was seen that there was no connection between bat and ball, which helped the all-rounder survive. Meanwhile, that drama didn’t benefit Sri Lanka as Dasun Shanaka fell on the very next ball.

    – Arshdeep Singh appealed.
    – Samson run outs Shanaka.
    – Umpire gave out for caught behind.
    – Shanaka reviews.
    – Shanaka survives as the first decision was considered.

Irfan Pathan explains the rules after Dasun Shanaka escapes run out

Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan also took to X to explain the rules that helped the Sri Lanka all-rounder Dasun Shanaka survive. He stated that the caught behind decision by the umpire, along with the review, made the ball dead and helped Dasun Shanaka survive.

“Since it has been given out caught behind, and reviewed, the ball is dead and umpire Gazi Sohel makes his point known to team India. first decision always stands and when it is given out by the umpire at the bowler’s end, the ball is dead and that’s why Shanaka escapes from being run out.,” the former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan wrote on X.

India set to face Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2025 final

The result of the match against Sri Lanka did not have any impact on India’s position in the tournament as they had already qualified for the Asia Cup 2025 final after winning their first two matches against Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Meanwhile, Pakistan secured their spot in the Asia Cup final with a narrow 11-run win over Bangladesh. It was their second victory in the Super Four stage, with their first win coming against Sri Lanka.

Now, India and Pakistan will clash in the high-voltage final of the Asia Cup 2025 in Dubai on Sunday, September 28. It will be for the first time in the history of the Asia Cup that the two arch-rivals will be clashing in the summit clash.

Notably, India are the most successful team in the Asia Cup, with 8 trophies in their cabinet while the Men In Green won two championships as well.

However, surprisingly enough, they never faced off against each other in the title showdown, but that will change soon, with the first-ever instance in 41 years seeing India vs Pakistan in an Asia Cup final.

The Indian team don’t have a very good record against Pakistan in tournament finals as they have clashed in summit clashes five times, with the Men In Blue winning two and the Men In Green winning three.
