8 majors that actually pay off in 2025 according to new Pew research
Maximise Your Earnings: Top College Majors for Financial Success in 2025-26 (Image: iStock)

College remains an investment but its payoff depends heavily on what you study. The Pew Research Center’s recent analyses of labour-market trends and the monetary value of degrees make one thing clear that the fields that teach technical, quantitative and healthcare skills continue to produce the strongest earnings and labour-market resilience in 2025. Choosing the right college major remains one of the most consequential decisions for students today, especially in a changing economy with shifting employment landscapes. New research from the Pew Research Center sheds light on which college majors deliver the best financial returns and career prospects in 2025. Analysing recent income, wealth data and labour market outcomes, Pew offers a clear view of which fields still “pay off” and can lead to economic stability and wealth accumulation.

    Computer science and information technology

Pew highlights that degrees in computer science continue to offer substantial earning potential. In their 2024 report Is a College Degree Worth It in 2024?, Pew states, “Graduates in computer science and related fields report higher median salaries and stronger employment outcomes compared to most other disciplines”. The demand for technical skills in AI, software development and data security fuels these positive outcomes.

    Engineering

Engineering disciplines top the charts for pay and job stability. Pew’s 2024 analysis emphasizes, “Engineering majors enjoy one of the highest financial returns on investment, with steady job growth projected through the late 2020s”. Fields like mechanical, civil and electrical engineering benefit from their application in infrastructure, manufacturing and technology industries.

    Nursing and allied health professions

The ongoing demand for healthcare workers ensures stable career paths for graduates. Pew’s 2025 income data shows nursing remains an excellent major for both job security and salary. The report notes, “Healthcare professions, particularly nursing, continue to be recession-resistant with median wages rising steadily”.

    Business and finance

Business-related majors are a substantial pathway to wealth creation, according to Pew’s 10 Facts about Today’s College Graduates. The 2022 study found, “Business and finance graduates report strong earnings and access to employer benefits that enable wealth accumulation, including 401(k) plans and stock options”. This leverage on financial markets and corporate careers enhances economic stability.

    Economics

Closely related to business, economics majors benefit from their analytical skills applied in policymaking, finance and consulting. A 2022 Pew report emphasized, “Economics graduates have consistently higher earnings and account for a notable share of leadership in finance and policy sectors”.

    Physical and life sciences

Majors like biology, chemistry, and physics hold steady value. Pew’s Is a College Degree Worth It report underscores, “Physical sciences offer strong median salaries, especially when paired with graduate education or certifications in research and healthcare”.

    Education (specialised fields and administration)

Though general education majors see moderate returns, specialised or administrative education degrees show better prospects. Pew notes, “Education degrees focused on administration or specialized fields such as STEM teaching tend to yield better financial outcomes”.

    Mathematics and statistics

With the rise of data-driven industries, mathematics and statistics are increasingly valuable majors. Pew states, “Graduates in math and statistics are enjoying rising incomes due to demand in finance, technology, and healthcare analytics”.The Pew Research Center’s latest data confirms that majors in computer science, engineering, nursing, business, economics, sciences, specialised education and mathematics are the most financially rewarding in 2025. These fields not only offer higher median salaries but also better access to employer benefits and wealth-building opportunities, underscoring their practical value in today’s labour market. Students and families can leverage this evidence to make informed choices aligning academic interests with economic security.
