    Women's Cricket World Cup: Rain plays spoilsport as New Zealand share spoil with Sri Lanka

    A Women’s Cricket World Cup match between New Zealand and Sri Lanka was abandoned due to continuous rain on Tuesday. Sri Lanka had posted a strong total of 258-6, highlighted by Nilakshika de Silva’s tournament-fastest fifty.The rain during the break prevented New Zealand from starting their innings, resulting in both teams sharing one point each.Sri Lanka, batting first after winning the toss, saw captain Chamari Athapaththu and Vishmi Gunaratne build a 101-run opening partnership. Athapaththu scored 53 runs with seven boundaries, achieving her 20th ODI half-century before being caught by Maddy Green off Rosemary Mair’s bowling.Gunaratne departed for 42 runs, followed by Hasini Perera and Harshitha Samarawickrama’s stabilizing partnership of 58 runs from 74 balls. Perera contributed 44 runs while Samarawickrama added 26.De Silva remained unbeaten on 55, reaching her fourth ODI fifty in just 26 balls, including one six and seven boundaries.For New Zealand, Sophie Devine claimed three wickets for 54 runs, while Bree Illing took two wickets for 39 runs.
