Australia will be up against England in the first match of the England tour of Australia. This article provides details about England’s Playing 11 vs Australia for the first match of the Ashes 2025.

England Playing XI vs Australia- 1st Test, The Ashes 2025:

    Openers: Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett

England would like to have a good start to the Ashes this time around, as the visitors would remember how the previous series on Australian soil kicked off when Riry Burns was bowled around his legs on the first ball of the series.

The Ben Stokes-led side would want to get rid of the poor record that the team possesses since winning the Ashes for the last time in this part of the world in 2010, having not won a single Test in the last three outings.

Having said that, England would be quite confident of putting on a much-improved effort, especially with the bat, as they have been playing some good cricket in the last couple of years in this format.

The onus will be on the opening pair of Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett to get the team off to a good start and create pressure on a depleted Australian bowling lineup, which will be without the services of captain Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood.

Both Crawley and Duckett have the capability of taking the game away from the opposition once they get going, and would hope to do that in the first of the five Tests itself.

Middle-order batsmen and all-rounders: Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (c), Jamie Smith (wk)

The openers would also want the middle order to make the most of the platform laid by them and help their team post a score of over 400 runs, as anything less than that will give Australia a chance to get back in the game.

All eyes will be on Joe Root, who is in search of his first Test hundred in Australia and would like to get the monkey off his back in the first innings of the opening game to build confidence for the rest of the series.

Other than Root, captain Ben Stokes, who is the only batter in the current squad to score a century in Australia, will have to lead from the front both with bat and ball to increase his team’s chances of challenging the Aussies.

Although the visitors possess a strong batting lineup, which includes names like Ollie Pope, Harry Brook, and Jamie Smith, a lot will depend on how England’s top five batters perform in the first Test.

Bowlers: Gus Atkinson, Jofra Archer, Brydon Carse, Mark Wood

It would be interesting to see the bowling combination that England opt to go with in the series opener, as the first Test of a series plays a crucial role in setting up the rhythm for the remainder of the tour, especially for the visiting team.

Taking into account how down and out Englishmen looked throughout the 2021 series, it won’t be a surprise if the team management decides to go in with an all pace attack comprising four fast bowlers and Ben Stokes for the first Test in Perth.

The four fast bowlers are expected to be Gus Atkinson, Jofra Archer, Brydon Carse, and Mark Wood, with Ben Stokes being the fifth bowling option.

However, playing an all pace attack would also mean that the visitors might have to compromise on their over rate, something which they haven’t been great at maintaining of late.
