NIT Silchar and Nirma University Innovate Safer, Smoother Road Speed Solution

GUWAHATI: Researchers from NIT Silchar and Nirma University, Ahmedabad, developed an innovative alternative to traditional speed bumps, aiming to reduce the discomfort associated with bumpy rides while effectively slowing down vehicles. This new solution, known as Spherical Cap Studs (SCS), was created as part of a research project funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) at NIT Silchar.Traditional speed bumps are effective at reducing vehicle speed but often cause significant discomfort to riders. The SCS offers a smoother experience by gradually slowing down vehicles, making it a safer and more comfortable option. This innovation is particularly beneficial in areas like markets, residential zones, and campuses, where a balance between road safety and commuter comfort is essential. The study focused on evaluating the potential of SCS as a substitute for conventional speed bumps, particularly for two-wheelers. Researchers compared the speed reduction capabilities and discomfort levels of SCS with those of traditional speed bumps. Data was collected using motorised two-wheelers and an Android application called Phyphox. The research was conducted by BTech students of the two higher educational institutions and guided by Assistant Professors Dr Suprava Jena of NIT Silchar and Dr Manish Dutta of Nirma University. The research concluded that SCS could effectively replace traditional speed bumps. The SCS demonstrated a similar ability to reduce speed while significantly reducing rider discomfort. The study employed an experimental approach to compare the speed-limiting ability and discomfort levels caused by SCS and standard speed bumps. Speed profiles for two-wheelers passing over both SCS and speed bumps were developed. The Mean Absolute Percentage Difference (MAPD) was used to compare speed profiles, revealing that SCS has comparable speed reduction capabilities to traditional speed bumps. In terms of discomfort, the Vibration Dose Value (VDV) and Static Compressive Stress (Se) were calculated for both scenarios. The analysis showed a 12.8% reduction in VDV and a substantial 45.57% reduction in Se when using SCS, indicating a significant decrease in discomfort.According to the research paper, traditional speed bumps can cause whole-body vibrations, leading to discomfort, injuries, and health impacts, especially for regular commuters and professionals like cab drivers and freight vehicle operators. These vibrations can also affect the lifespan of vehicles and damage perishable goods. SCS offers a solution that mitigates these issues, providing a safer and more comfortable alternative for road users.
