The cricketing world has been plunged into a diplomatic firestorm following the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) decision to replace Bangladesh with Scotland for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. Amidst this upheaval, former Indian cricketer has launched a scathing attack on Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, labelling his recent threats to boycott the tournament as foolish bravado.

Former Cricketer’s comments come at a time when the geopolitical tensions between South Asian cricketing nations are spilling onto the field. Naqvi recently suggested that Pakistan might reconsider its participation in the marquee event, hosted by India and Sri Lanka, in a show of solidarity with Bangladesh. The veteran, however, views this as a calculated political move that treats athletes as mere pawns.

Speaking to ANI, Atul Wassan did not mince words, accusing the PCB chief of using cricket to score “brownie points” at the expense of his own players. He argued that the threat to pull out of the 2026 World Cup is an attempt to “blackmail” the global cricketing order.

“I think this is just a bravado, and it’s foolish bravado at best to just eyeball ICC and blackmail the whole cricketing world order,” Wassan stated. He emphasized that while politicians gain mileage by taking such stances, it is the players who face the “collateral damage.” Wassan noted that the cricketers themselves are often left in the dark, acting as political capital for administrators who want to raise their moustache in a display of ego.

The former pacer’s remarks highlight a growing concern that Pakistan’s support for Bangladesh—which was ejected from the tournament after the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) refused to adhere to the match schedule in India is less about “fairness” and more about regional posturing.

The Bangladesh ouster and their replacement in T20 World Cup 2026

The controversy began when the ICC officially announced on Saturday that Scotland would replace Bangladesh in Group C. The decision followed a prolonged standoff where the BCB cited security concerns and refused to travel to India, requesting their matches be moved to Sri Lanka. The ICC rejected this, citing a lack of “credible security threats” and the logistical impossibility of shifting venues so close to the February 7 start date.

Naqvi has been a vocal critic of this move, alleging “double standards” by the ICC. He argued that if special arrangements could be made for other nations, Bangladesh deserved similar concessions. Naqvi went as far as to say that Pakistan’s final decision on participation rests with the government, hinting that if Pakistan withdraws, the ICC “can bring a 22nd team.”

However, the ICC’s stance remains firm. By replacing the “Tigers” with Scotland, the highest-ranked non-qualified team, the governing body has signalled that the tournament will proceed with or without those who refuse the schedule. As the countdown to the World Cup begins, the focus remains on whether Pakistan will follow through on its threat or if Wassan’s assessment of political theater will prove correct.
