Australian selectors stunned one and all by overlooking Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, and Steve Smith for the upcoming T20I series in Bangladesh, which sparked retirement talks.

Recently, Cricket Australia announced the new-look squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Bangladesh, where Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, and Steve Smith have not found a place for themselves. This raised questions about whether the careers of the trio in T20Is were ended.

Australia leave out Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, and Steve Smith from T20I squad

Apart from Maxwell, Stoinis, and Smith, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood were also not picked for either the Pakistan or Bangladesh tour. But it is being said that they have been rested because of the IPL 2026 commitments and the busy test schedule.

So, the absence of Maxwell, Stoinis, and Smith grabbed massive attention because none of them have retired from T20I cricket. They have been key players for Australia. But after Australia’s disappointing campaign in the T20 World Cup 2026, the selectors now want to test some younger players and prepare a stronger squad for the upcoming big events.

With the Los Angeles Olympics and the 2028 T20 World Cup on the mind, Australia is ready to slowly rebuild its T20 team, but doors are still not closed for these players.

George Bailey clears air on retirement rumours

Now, the chair of the selectors, George Bailey, has made it clear that this is not retirement time yet for Stoinis, Maxwell, and Smith. Bailey explained that the senior trio has not been officially dropped; instead, this is simply a phase where the team management wants to give chances to different players and build more depth in the squad.

George Bailey said in an official statement, “It’s not the end of the road. I wouldn’t call it dropped per se, but I understand that they’re not within the squad. But certainly, just given where we are in the cycle of T20s and on the back of our World Cup result, it’s a good opportunity, I think, to have a look at some different players.”

He added, “I’m not taking away the fact that every time that we take a team or squad away, the expectation and our expectation are that we will win and those players will perform. So, it’s a really important period of time, I think, for that T20 group to actually start to develop some different players in different roles across that. But that’s not to say that it might be the last we’ve seen of those three.”

Smith, Maxwell and Stoinis continue fighting

Notably, Maxwell is now 37 years old and has struggled with consistency recently, but he has shown no signs of retirement and is continuing to play franchise cricket across the world. Stoinis, who will also turn 37 later this year, remains one of the most dangerous T20 all-rounders in franchise cricket.

On the other hand, Smith has openly shown interest in representing Australia at the Los Angeles Olympics, and he recently impressed in the PSL 2026, where he scored 380 runs at a strike rate above 161, including a brilliant century.

Joel Davies gets big praise from George Bailey

While some senior stars missed out, Aaron Hardie has returned to the T20I squad after an excellent PSL 2026 season, and the young all-rounder Joel Davies has also earned his chance after impressing in the Big Bash League for the Sydney Sixers.

Bailey signed off by saying, “I think there’s a high degree of talent there. Starting to see the fruits of that in some white-ball performances for New South Wales and through the Big Bash this year.”

“He’s a left-arm spinner as well, and we’ve spoken at length about the importance of that and the development of that throughout the country, and hopefully we get to see a little bit of that as well.”
