Three teams Darnell Nurse would okay a trade too
NHL Watcher: Elliotte Friedman on The Fan Hockey Show on the Philadelphia Flyers and a potential fit for Darnell Nurse: “I think they are interested, I’ve heard enough noise out of there to think that they are interested and I think that is a team he’d consider going to”
Jackie Spiegel: Hearing there is a mutual interest between the Flyers and Nurse. Would the Oilers retain?
David Pagnotta: Sources say that the Los Angeles Kings and Pittsburgh Penguins are two teams that Nurse would okay a trade too.
- Austin Stanovich: “I know a lot of Kings fans will scoff at the idea of Nurse, but assuming the cost to get him is low he does upgrade their blue line. They’re better if he’s the LD2 rather than Edmundson next season.”
NHL Rumors: Dallas Stars, Carolina Hurricanes, and the Top 30 NHL Free Agents
Jim Matheson: Los Angeles Kings GM Ken Holland will likely be interested in Nurse to help fix their weak blue line. The Oilers should only do it unless forward Alex Laferriere is coming back.
- Jim Matheson: “Yes Laferrière may be reach but, again, Kings D is weak”
- Jim Matheson: “Holland would trade for Nurse in heartbeat for his weak D. Not moving Laferrière but you can bet GM would move G Kuemper. If Oilers could get Kuemper (1 yr left at $5.25m) to tag-team Jarry and winger Trevor Moore (2yrs at $4.2m) might that work? Toss in W Quinn Hutson to LA.”
Jim Matheson: “History suggests that teams don’t get large return for 30ish D on big contracts…see Rangers return from Ducks for $8m Trouba. So maybe simplest LA scenario for Nurse is left D Joel Edmundson at $3.85m for 2 more years.”
The fallout when the Oilers trade Nurse
Jonathan Willis: “Darnell Nurse is a good, useful NHL defenceman who is overpaid relative to his contributions. The Oilers will miss his on-ice presence when it’s gone, even if the books will be cleaner.”
Jason Gregor: “Oilers need to make smart decision when trading Nurse. Always available. Has only missed 18 games the past 9 seasons. Can log big minutes. Skates well. Is physical. Can chip in offensively at 5×5. He is 40th in EV goals and points among Dmen the past three seasons. He’s not a #1 Dman, but he has value. Oilers can’t afford another trade similar to Stuart Skinner.”
Kevin McCurdy: Four points on the Nurse situation.
“1. It is time, no question. And more importantly it’s time for Darnell to get a fresh look somewhere else where he won’t have quite so many preconceptions about him.
2. Every single one of you would have signed the contract Darnell did. His contract is not a reflection on him, nobody ever wants less money. It’s a reflection of a team that backed themselves into a corner and panicked. That lesson could be important again this week.
NHL Rumors: Winnipeg Jets, and a Top NHL Trade Board
3. Darnell Nurse is a leader both on and off the ice. He has been nominated for the King Clancy Memorial Trophy 4 times and a finalist twice. He’s been a loyal soldier to this team for 12 seasons, despite some of the most egregious hate I’ve ever seen a player experience.
4. Be careful what you wish for, this could very well turn into a “one does not simply” situation.”
