Will Mumbai schools and colleges remain closed tomorrow amid IMD orange alert?
Will Mumbai schools and colleges remain closed tomorrow amid IMD orange alert?

Heavy rainfall continued across Mumbai on June 23, leading to waterlogging in several parts of the city and disrupting traffic movement. Amid the ongoing downpour and an orange alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), many students and parents are wondering whether schools and colleges will remain open tomorrow. As of now, there has been no official announcement from the Mumbai administration regarding the closure of schools and colleges. Authorities have not declared a holiday, and educational institutions are expected to function as usual unless a fresh order is issued.

IMD issues orange alert for Mumbai

The IMD has issued an orange alert for Mumbai and neighbouring Palghar district, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds over the next few hours.Sharing the weather update on X, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), quoting the IMD, said, “Thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and intense to very intense spells of rain with gusty winds reaching 40-60 kmph are very likely to occur at isolated places.”The weather warning comes after several parts of the city witnessed intense rainfall overnight.

Waterlogging affects traffic in several areas

Heavy rain led to waterlogging at multiple locations across Mumbai, affecting the movement of vehicles and causing inconvenience to commuters.According to BMC rainfall data, Mumbai recorded an average rainfall of 56 mm between 8 am and 11 pm on June 23. The eastern suburbs received 23 mm rainfall, while the western suburbs recorded 33 mm.Several areas in the western suburbs reported significant rainfall between 10 pm and 11 pm. Charkop Sector 1 Municipal School in Kandivali recorded 32 mm rainfall, MHB Municipal School in Malad received 28 mm, while Gajdharbandh Storm Water Pumping Station recorded 26 mm.

BMC official speaks on the situation

Speaking to news agency ANI, a BMC official said civic authorities are continuing efforts to manage severe waterlogging in affected areas.“We have not been able to find a temporary solution for this severe waterlogging. Our officers keep standing here to ensure vehicles don’t pass through. But some rickshaw drivers still try to get their vehicles across. A rickshaw got stuck here in the centre of the subway. The driver’s life was in danger. Two of our officers helped bring him out,” he told ANI.

    School holiday announcement awaited

At present, no official order has been issued regarding a school or college holiday in Mumbai for tomorrow. Students and parents are advised to keep checking updates from the Mumbai administration, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, and their respective educational institutions. If weather conditions worsen, authorities may take a decision and issue an announcement. Until then, schools and colleges remain open as per the existing schedule.
