Shaye Scott Renews Vows with Wife Amanda for 20th Wedding Anniversary, 7 Years After Coming Out as Trans (Exclusive)

Shaye and Amanda Scott are reaffirming their love, 20 years later.

PEOPLE can exclusively share that the happy couple — known by over 1 million followers across Instagram and TikTok — renewed their vows at a small ceremony near their home in Utah, surrounded by their three children.

The vow renewal holds a special significance, the couple tells PEOPLE, as Shaye had not yet come out as trans when they first tied the knot two decades prior.

In 2019, Shaye first shared with her wife that she experienced gender dysphoria — a feeling of discomfort that a person experiences when their gender identity doesn't align with the sex assigned to them at birth — and over the next several years, the couple left the Mormon Church and started sharing Shaye's transition with their family and friends.

"Twenty years ago when Shaye and I were married, the life we have now would have been unimaginable to me then,” Amanda says. “Shaye's transition has uncovered the truest and most beautiful part of her, and it's been such a joy to witness. In turn, I've become a freer and more joyful version of myself as well."

“I never could have imagined that Amanda would help me see that a part of me that I once feared is worthy of love and worth being celebrated,” Shaye shares. “I feel so fortunate.”

She adds that, beyond being merely a celebration of their love, the vow renewal is “a recognition of the fight that so many have been a part of — to recognize the dignity of queer and trans people.”

“Trans people are loveable and worthy of respect in our society,” she continues. “We hope to be a small part of building bridges and opening people's hearts."

Online, the couple have documented Shaye's transition — including her decision to undergo bottom surgery and how Amanda's understanding of her own sexuality has evolved. Through humor and love, the pair showcase the trans experience in all of its nuances.

When planning their vow renewal, Amanda tells PEOPLE, the couple “debated all kinds of destinations” — but ultimately landed on Utah, as it felt “the most meaningful” for their love story.

“When we married in a Mormon temple here 20 years ago, we fit into the norms and ideals of our community,” she says. “There is a profound power in celebrating our love that has evolved in the very place that still struggles to understand us.”

And while Shaye initially planned to wear a dress alongside Amanda, she instead opted for a salmon pink powersuit, designed by her wife, which she says “honors my past.”

Adds Shaye: “It's even more meaningful that my wife made it for me.”

“Despite the current stigma in our society around being trans, I am living a full and joyful life surrounded by the people I love most,” she concludes. “I wish for every trans person to have the same."
