Halloween Candy Sold Across 13 States Recalled for Undisclosed Allergen

Chocolate Halloween candy is being recalled after it was distributed to 13 states.

Crystal Temptations issued a recall of its Halloween Chocolatey Eyeballs on Aug. 31 after discovering the products contained undeclared milk products, according to an announcement on the brand’s site and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Those with allergies or severe sensitivity to milk could experience a “serious or life-threatening” reaction to consuming the products, the announcement read.

According to Mayo Clinic, an allergic reaction to milk can occur soon after consuming a product containing it, and can include wheezing, vomiting, itching, hives, swelling and digestive issues. In extreme cases, a person can go into anaphylaxis, an extreme allergic reaction that is life threatening.

The issue was discovered by a TJX analyst who found that the Chocolatey Eyeballs containing whey were not labeled as containing milk. A further investigation by the company found that the error was caused by a “temporary breakdown in the company’s production and packaging processes.”

The candy was distributed and sold in Marshalls, TJ Maxx, HomeGoods and Sierra Trading Post across 13 states, including Arizona, Texas, Virginia, Georgia, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Indiana, Nevada, California, New Jersey, Connecticut, Ohio and Wyoming.

The recall extends to the following products: “Crystal Temptations” plastic bag with designed header card – Chocolatey Eyeballs, 10 oz. (style number 54040-CHEY), “Crystal Temptations” acrylic box with designed paper wrap – Chocolatey Eyeballs, 7 oz. (style number 54077-CHEY), “Crystal Temptations” round plastic jar – Chocolatey Eyeballs, 10.5 oz. (style number 58008-CHEY), “Crystal Temptations” designer plastic pouch bag – Chocolatey Eyeballs, 16 oz. (style number 58089-CHEY), and “Crystal Temptations” plastic bag tied with a tag – Chocolatey Eyeballs, 11 oz. (style number 54083-CHEY).
