Australia have delayed announcing their playing XI for the opening Test against South Africa in Durban after all-rounder Cooper Connolly was quarantined with a head cold. Connolly attended the team’s final training session before wearing a mask and leaving Kingsmead in a separate car.

The first Test will begin on Friday, October 9, with Kingsmead expected to offer assistance to spinners. Australia are weighing up their middle-order options and whether to include left-arm spinner Matt Kuhnemann. South Africa will miss Kagiso Rabada due to a hamstring injury.

Connolly Quarantined As Australia Delay Team Selection

Cooper Connolly’s illness has added another complication to Australia’s selection plans ahead of the series opener. Selectors will take another look at the pitch on Friday morning before confirming the playing XI.

Australia are considering different combinations involving Connolly, Nic Maddinson, and Beau Webster, with two of the three in contention for selection. Cameron Green is unavailable due to an abdominal injury, while Josh Inglis is also absent.

Captain Pat Cummins said the team was assessing its options based on the expected conditions and the players’ individual strengths.

“We’re just trying to work out what we think is the best batting lineup for those conditions, obviously Cam Green’s out,” Cummins said. “You know, Josh Inglis isn’t here as well. So that’s a couple of, kind of, the changes that you’ve got to match up.”

“Conditions is another one. You know, what are they going to throw at us? Everyone brings something a little bit different to it, and it’s just trying to work out what the combo is.”

Andrew McDonald Wants Team To Build Bigger Totals

Head coach Andrew McDonald said Australia needed to improve their approach and avoid rushing through their innings. He acknowledged that recent conditions had made batting difficult but believed the team must take advantage of periods when the pitch offers fewer challenges.

“There’s been conversations about where we can improve … there has been a lot of work, a lot of thought,” McDonald said. “We have played in conditions that haven’t been favourable to the bat. So you know the numbers are slightly lower than what you would expect, but the flip side of that is the bowling numbers have come down.”

“If we get some flat periods in this series, it’ll be the ability to go big, put the scoreboard pressure back onto the opposition,” he said.

The visiting team’s batting will be under scrutiny after several seasons of inconsistent performances on challenging pitches. Cameron Green was the only Australian batter to score a century during the home series against Bangladesh in August.

Travis Head Explains His Risk-Reward Approach

Travis Head will be important at the top of the batting order alongside the experienced Steve Smith. Head has recently been dismissed after dragging deliveries onto his stumps, particularly against medium-pacers on slower pitches. However, he defended his attacking approach.

“For me, it’s all about risk and reward,” Head said. “Reward of runs against risk, and what may look high risk to people in the box watching the game or at home sometimes feels low risk to me in the middle. So it’s that balancing act.”

“Sometimes people go too hard. Sometimes people go not hard enough, and there’s always criticism the other way if you’re five off 50 balls. So yeah, you’re always trying to balance that, and I’m just trying to keep percentages in my favour as much as I can,” he said.

South Africa, led by Temba Bavuma, are without Rabada. Spinners Keshav Maharaj and Simon Harmer could play key roles on a surface expected to turn. The hosts will also draw confidence from their 2025 World Test Championship final victory against Australia at Lord’s.
