There is no urgency to get a Will Smith extension done, but what could a deal look like?
Daily Faceoff: Jeff Marek and David Pagnotta discuss the San Jose Sharks and pending RFA forward Will Smith and what his next contract could look like.
Marek: “Will Smith, San Jose Sharks.”
Pagnotta: “Yes.”
Marek: “Now in the era where everybody comes off their entry-level deal and they ring the bell. Given how important Will Smith is to the future of the San Jose Sharks, what does that extension look like?”
The New York Rangers and their Goaltending Situation
Pagnotta: “Those conversations have been very, very loose coming into the season. And there doesn’t seem to be, from my understanding, talking to people on both sides, there’s no sense of urgency, right now, with respect on either side, with respect to getting something ironed out.
He’s off to a solid start. Him and Macklin Celebrini have created one hell of a great relationship between the two. They’re together all the time. They’re, they’re together all the time in the offseason.
They’re going to get to this at some point, but the sense of urgency right now isn’t there from, from either side. But what I can tell you is that the comparables have mounted. If he has the season that I think a lot of people expect him to have, those (Adam) Fantilli, (Cutter) Gauthier numbers are going to look pretty nice when they’re presented to the San Jose Sharks.”
Marek: “I thought you were going to say expect another Daniel Briere offer sheet.”
NHL Rumors: Alexander Nikishin and the Hurricanes … Will Smith and the Sharks
Pagnotta: “Well, look, it may get to that. I don’t think the Sharks want to go down that road. But you’re looking at you’re looking at a player that’s looking at double digits again. You know, yeah, Macklin’s got $18.8 (million), 12, 12.2, and you got $30 million for the two on a shorter-term deal. If you’re going full term, you’re probably looking higher than that.”
