She said missing work means losing income. Her elderly mother helps with school drop off and pick up, but cannot manage full day care. Sanabria has been assigning reading, writing and mathematics exercises at home while monitoring developments in negotiations.
The terms of the dispute
The union has sought a nine percent salary increase over two years, arguing that it would help offset the high cost of living in San Francisco. District officials have offered a six percent increase spread over three years. The district faces a one hundred million dollar deficit and is under state oversight because of a long standing financial crisis, according to the Associated Press. Officials have cited budget constraints in rejecting the union’s wage proposal. Superintendent Maria Su said there had been progress in talks, including discussions on support for homeless families, training for teachers in the use of artificial intelligence tools and the establishment of guidelines for such tools in classrooms.
