Bitcoin slipped back below the $90,000 mark on Thursday as traders reacted to the Federal Reserve’s first rate decision of 2026. The largest cryptocurrency is trading near $87,700, after briefly moving above $90,000 earlier in the day.  The wider crypto market also edged lower before and after the Fed announcement. The US central bank kept interest rates unchanged in the 3.50%–3.75% range. Officials repeated that future moves will be decided “meeting by meeting.” That message failed to calm markets and kept risk assets uneven. If there’s a silver lining to our tumultuous times, it’s that musicians are reviving the protest song, a tradition that has withered since the end of the Vietnam War. Credence Clearwater Revival’s “Fortunate Son,” Arlo Guthrie’s “Alice’s Restaurant,” Jimi Hendrix’s “Machine Gun”—these songs all took aim at the Johnson and Nixon administrations’ increasingly misguided war effort. But it was Neil Young who wrote the most damning protest song. When the Ohio National Guard shot and killed four students at Kent State in 1970, Young disappeared for a few hours and returned with the haunting lyrics of “Ohio.” Tin soldiers and…

In this year’s World Dramatic Competition program, I viewed three films that are irrevocably tied to the cultures they come from. Each examines experiences of girlhood and coming of age against the backdrop of the nations of England, Mexico, and The Philippines. Stylistically, two wholeheartedly commit, for better and worse, while the other neglects to fully lean into its choices.  Molly Manners’ whimsical bildungsroman “Extra Geography,” based on the short story by Rose Tremain, follows best friends Minna (Galaxie Clear) and Flic (Marni Duggan) through their days at a British boarding school. Thick as thieves, the girls traipse through the…

While most of my fellow Michiganders like to think of Detroit as the birthplace of the automobile, we have to remember, the Germans have us beat.   German inventor and entrepreneur, Carl Benz submitted his patent application on January 29, 1886, and as car buffs know, this represented the advent of the world’s first production automobile, the Motorwagen. The story goes that its maiden roadtrip was taken by Benz’s wife, Bertha and their two sons, Eugen and Richard, supposedly without letting the inventor know! That Model #3 topped out at two-horsepower and a blistering 10 miles per hour. Despite its humble…
