Babar Azam missed his 10th Test hundred by a few centimeters. Due to a miscommunication with his batting partner Abdullah Shafique, the Pakistan Test team captain had to depart on Day 3 of the ongoing West Indies vs Pakistan 2nd Test match at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain.

Azam was looking solid on the pitch, heading towards a century, but his momentum was suddenly cut short by an accurate throw from the hand of Brandon King. It was a direct hit; the keeper was in position, but he did not have to grab the ball. The ball hit the stumps directly, leaving the batter disappointed.

Babar Azam was visibly fuming over his batting partner Abdullah Shafique

Azam was fuming at his batting partner, Abdullah Shafique, who was then standing at the non-striker’s end, called for a single, but scrubbed the idea as soon as he spotted Brandon King rushing near to the ball, which was rolling on the ground barely with any pace.

By the time Abdullah Shafique snubbed the idea to steal a single and shouted a loud ‘no’ to Babar Azam, Babar was then nearing half of the track with full throttle. He turned back quickly and moved both of his feet as fast as possible. It was already late; Babar tried hard to get back into the crease, but it was a direct throw which left no chance for the batter but to leave the ground.

The batter knew that he was well short of the safe line when the bails were ejected from the stumps. The field umpire went for a check. The third umpire took a few moments before confirming ‘OUT’ on the giant screen. Babar went for 88 off 147.

He came to bat at number four and hit ten 4s and one 6 to create the innings. The partnership of Babar and Abdullah Shafique was looking unbreakable before the run-out. When Babar walked out with 88, Shafique was batting on 116 off 217.

1317 days without a century in Test for Babar Azam

It is worth noting that, with today’s run-out, Babar remains without a Test century for 1317 days. His last Test century, which was a 161-run innings against New Zealand, was on December 26, 2022, during the first Test match at the National Stadium in Karachi. Since then, he has not secured a single century yet.

Brandon King’s throw punched the Pakistan captain to an unwanted record as well. Babar is among the batters who have been dismissed in record numbers in Tests.
