Beyond internships: IIT Gandhinagar lets BTech students earn credits through a full semester in industry and startups
How IIT Gandhinagar is making the workplace a classroom for engineering students

Engineering education is increasingly moving beyond textbooks and laboratories, with institutes looking for ways to prepare students for the demands of a fast-changing workplace. While internships have long been a part of this journey, they often remain short-term experiences that sit outside the formal academic curriculum. The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Gandhinagar is attempting something different. Instead of treating industry exposure as an add-on, the institute has made it a credit-bearing part of its undergraduate programme, allowing BTech students to spend an entire semester working with companies, research labs, academic institutions or startups without delaying their graduation. The initiative reflects a growing shift towards integrating real-world learning into engineering education rather than keeping it separate from classroom instruction.A semester where work counts as learningIntroduced in the 2025-26 academic year, IIT Gandhinagar’s External Exposure Activity is available to seventh-semester BTech students as an elective. Through the course module IN 498 – External Exposure, students can earn up to 16 academic credits by undertaking semester-long engagements with approved organisations. This makes the programme stand out from conventional internships. Instead of a summer break assignment, students spend nearly an entire semester working on live projects while remaining on track academically. Their work is evaluated jointly by the host organisation and faculty members through periodic reviews, ensuring that the professional experience meets academic standards.According to the institute, the flexibility of the programme also allows students to choose opportunities aligned with their interests—whether in industry, research, entrepreneurship or higher education.Industry, research and startups under one academic frameworkSo far, 18 students have participated in the initiative, working with organisations such as Qualcomm, Samsung R&D, Oracle, Tower Research Capital, Solar Defence and Aerospace Limited, the California Institute of Technology and the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru. Others have gained experience in startups such as HapiHygi Innovations Pvt. Ltd.The institute says the model is designed to expose students to workplace culture, multidisciplinary collaboration and real-world engineering challenges before they graduate. It also aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which encourages experiential learning and stronger industry-academia partnerships.Sharing his experience, BTech Computer Science student Bhoumik Patidar, who completed his external exposure at Qualcomm, worked on an open-source software project involving an ELF linker. He said the experience strengthened his problem-solving skills and deepened his interest in systems programming.Similarly, Electrical Engineering student Tejas Zunjare worked on embedded systems, circuit design and hardware development at HapiHygi Innovations. He said the opportunity helped him understand how classroom concepts translate into solving practical engineering problems.A shift in how engineering is taughtThe uniqueness of IIT Gandhinagar’s approach lies in formally recognising workplace learning as part of the degree itself. Rather than expecting students to balance internships alongside academic commitments, the institute has created a structured pathway where professional exposure carries the same academic value as classroom learning. As engineering careers increasingly demand practical problem-solving, collaboration and innovation, such models may offer a glimpse into how technical education could evolve. By giving students the flexibility to choose between conventional classroom study and a semester of immersive external engagement, IIT Gandhinagar is reimagining what it means to prepare graduates for the future of work.
