The Guyana Amazon Warriors, winner of 2023 and finalist of 2024 edition, will be poised to present their claim for the title in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2025. The team is set to open its campaign with a highly anticipated game against the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots. Cricket fans will be glued to their screens as the Warriors take the field on August 15 at the historic Warner Park in Basseterre. This clash promises to be an exhilarating start to what is sure to be another fiercely contested season of Caribbean cricket.

Guyana Amazon Warriors’ CPL legacy and performance history

The Amazon Warriors hold a storied, if at times heartbreaking, history in the CPL. As one of the original six franchises, they have been a model of consistency, holding the unique distinction of never being eliminated in the group stage since the league’s inception. Their record, however, was long defined by near misses, as they reached a staggering six finals without winning the title.

They were the perennial runners-up, falling at the final hurdle in 2013, 2014, 2016, 2018, 2019 and again in 2024. This string of defeats led to a narrative of the team ‘choking’ in crucial moments. That changed in 2023 when, under the captaincy of Imran Tahir, the team finally broke their championship drought by defeating the Trinbago Knight Riders to lift their first-ever trophy. This monumental victory, celebrated on home soil at the Providence Stadium, cemented their legacy and transformed them from a team of consistent contenders to a club of champions, and they are now the defending champions heading into the 2025 season.

5 players to watch out for from Guyana Amazon Warriors in CPL 2025

    1. Shamar Joseph

The dynamic West Indies fast bowler has quickly become a sensation in international cricket and is set to bring his high-octane pace to the CPL. Known for his ability to consistently bowl at speeds over 140 kph, Joseph is a game-changer with the ball. While his T20 career is still in its early stages, his impactful performances in Test cricket, including a memorable spell of 7/68 against Australia, demonstrate his fighting spirit and wicket-taking ability. His knack for picking up early wickets and his aggressive approach make him a player to watch as he looks to establish himself as a premier T20 bowler.

    2. Imran Tahir

The veteran leg-spinner and captain is the lynchpin of the Amazon Warriors’ bowling attack. At 46 years old, Tahir continues to defy age with his fiery celebrations and a bag of tricks. He has a remarkable T20 career, with a bowling average of just over 15 and a career-best of 5/23. His ability to bamboozle batters with his flight, variations, and deceptive googlies makes him a constant threat in the middle overs. As the team’s leader, his experience and tactical nous will be crucial in guiding the Warriors’ campaign.

    3. Shai Hope

The stylish wicketkeeper-batter is a vital part of the Warriors’ top order. While traditionally known for his prowess in longer formats, Hope has effectively adapted his game to the T20 format, combining a solid technique with the ability to accelerate when needed. He has a T20I strike rate of over 137 and a career-best of 102 not out, showcasing his potential for explosive hitting. Hope’s ability to anchor an innings and shift gears makes him a dangerous proposition, and his form with the bat will be key to the team’s success.

The World Cup-winning English all-rounder adds immense value to the Amazon Warriors with both bat and ball. A clean hitter of the ball, Moeen Ali boasts a T20I batting strike rate of over 142. His off-spin provides a crucial control option in the middle overs and can also be a genuine wicket-taking threat. With the ability to bat anywhere in the top and middle order, Moeen’s flexibility and experience in major T20 leagues worldwide make him a perfect fit for the CPL and a player who can single-handedly change the course of a match.

    5. Iftikhar Ahmed

The hard-hitting Pakistan all-rounder is a valuable addition to the Warriors’ middle order. Known for his explosive hitting, Iftikhar Ahmed has a T20I strike rate of 129.11 and can clear the boundary with ease. He is also a handy off-spin bowler, capable of picking up key wickets and providing the captain with a useful option to control the run rate. Iftikhar’s ability to finish an innings with a flourish and contribute with the ball in pressure situations makes him an exciting player to watch in the CPL 2025.
