CBSE class 12 Political Science exam 2026: What students must focus on according to official sample paper
CBSE class 12 Political Science exam 2026

With the CBSE Class 12 board examinations 2026 drawing closer, Political Science students can gain a clear advantage by closely studying the official CBSE sample question paper for the 2025–26 academic session. The paper offers strong cues about question trends, topic weightage and the Board’s continued focus on conceptual understanding, structured writing and application-based learning across both Politics in India Since Independence and Contemporary World Politics.A review of the sample paper suggests that predictable themes from NCERT remain central, but questions are framed to test interpretation rather than memorisation.Students appearing for the class 12 Political Science examination can download the sample paper released by CBSE from its official website. The same can be downloaded by clicking on the link below: CBSE class 12 Political Science sample paper 2026.

What the sample paper indicates about the exam pattern

The Political Science paper will carry 80 marks and a duration of three hours, divided into five sections. All questions are compulsory, with internal choices provided in descriptive answers. The format includes multiple-choice questions, short and long answers, picture-based interpretation, political map work and passage-based questions. This structure confirms that students must be equally comfortable with theory, interpretation of sources and visual-based questions.

Important MCQ and short-answer topics students should revise

The objective section draws directly from core NCERT concepts. Questions focus on major developments in world politics such as the end of bipolarity, traditional views of security, environmental agreements and global commons. Indian politics questions test knowledge of political leaders, ideologies and post-independence developments.Short-answer questions highlight recurring themes like the Mandal Commission, democratisation in neighbouring countries, cooperative security, global poverty and the difference between one-party dominance and a one-party system. These answers require crisp explanations within the prescribed word limit.

Analytical areas likely to appear in 4-mark questions

The 4-mark section reflects CBSE’s preference for answers that combine explanation with relevance. Students are expected to write structured responses supported by examples drawn strictly from the textbook.Based on the sample paper, high-priority areas include:

    • India’s role in promoting Afro-Asian unity during Jawaharlal Nehru’s leadership
    • Regional demands as expressions of India’s unity in diversity
    • The continuing strength of India–Russia relations
    • Causes and consequences of globalisation
    • Political significance of the 1977 Lok Sabha elections

These questions reward clarity, organisation and well-developed points.

Picture, map and passage-based questions remain important

The sample paper reinforces that visual and source-based questions are an integral part of the examination. Environmental images linked to the Earth Summit and Global North–South divide, along with political map questions related to the 1967 elections, must be prepared thoroughly.Passage-based questions test comprehension as well as conceptual understanding, particularly in topics related to South Asian politics, SAARC and Sino-Indian relations.

Long-answer questions that can influence overall scores

The 6-mark questions demand analytical depth and disciplined writing. Students are expected to present arguments logically while staying within the word limit.Important long-answer themes include:

    • Reforms in the United Nations and India’s case for permanent UNSC membership
    • Evolution and functioning of the UN system
    • Emerging political consensus in India despite party differences
    • Linguistic reorganisation of states and accommodation of regional demands
    • Integration of princely states, especially Manipur
    • ASEAN’s role as an economic organisation
    • Japan as a potential centre of global power

Strong introductions and balanced conclusions are essential in this section.

How students should use the sample paper for preparation

The sample paper should be treated as a revision roadmap rather than a guess paper. Students are advised to focus on NCERT text, practise map work regularly and rehearse answers within time limits to improve presentation and accuracy. For more information related to CBSE sample question papers, students are advised to visit the official website, cbseacademic.nic.in.
