England Women commenced their One Day International (ODI) series against West Indies Women in emphatic fashion, securing a resounding 108-run victory in the first ODI at the County Ground. Centuries from Tammy Beaumont and Amy Jones, followed by a sensational five-wicket haul from Linsey Smith, ensured a dominant performance from the home side.

Tammy Beaumont and Amy Jones add a record-breaking opening partnership for England

Having won the toss and electing to bat first, England immediately set about asserting their dominance, posting a formidable total of 345/6 in their allotted 50 overs. The innings was highlighted by an exceptional opening partnership between Beaumont and Jones. Beaumont, showcasing her class, struck a magnificent 107 runs off 104 deliveries, featuring 8 fours and 4 sixes. Not to be outdone, Jones played an even more aggressive innings, smashing a superb 122 runs off 121 balls, laced with 15 fours and a six, as she returned to the top of the order with a bang. Their record-breaking opening stand pf 221 runs laid the foundation for England’s imposing total. Natalie Sciver also contributed a quickfire 52 runs off just 36 balls, including 6 fours and a six, further accelerating the scoring rate in the latter stages. For the West Indies, Hayley Matthews and Afy Fletcher were the pick of the bowlers, both claiming two wickets each, but the overall bowling effort struggled to contain the English batters.

Linsey Smith helps England in bowling out West Indies for 237

Chasing a massive target of 346, West Indies Women faced an uphill battle from the outset. Despite a spirited effort from their captain Matthews, who scored a fluent 48 runs off 47 balls, and a resilient 62 from Qiana Joseph off 74 deliveries, the West Indies innings never truly threatened England’s imposing total. While Aaliyah Alleyne provided some late resistance with a valuable 44 off 46 balls, consistent wickets from England’s bowlers stifled any significant partnerships. The West Indies ultimately succumbed, being bowled out for 237 in 48.2 overs.

The star with the ball for England was debutant Linsey Smith, who delivered a mesmerizing performance to claim her maiden five-wicket haul in ODI cricket. Her figures of 5 wickets for just 36 runs from 10 overs dismantled the West Indies middle and lower order, showcasing her control and variations. Emily Arlott also chipped in with two crucial wickets, while Lauren Bell, Kate Cross and Alice Capsey each claimed a wicket, contributing to a comprehensive bowling display that ensured England’s victory.
