Erika McEntarfer educational qualification and career path: How an economist rose to lead the Bureau of Labor Statistics before being fired by Trump
Erika McEntarfer firing: From Bard College to Bureau of Labor Statistics commissioner

Erika Lee McEntarfer, the commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), was controversially fired by President Donald Trump hours after the release of a weaker-than-expected jobs report. The dismissal followed a substantial downward revision in employment figures from previous months, which drew criticism and allegations of politicisation from the US president. McEntarfer’s firing marked the end of a notable career in labour economics and public service.Trump accused McEntarfer of incompetence and of manipulating job data to discredit him and Republicans ahead of the 2024 presidential election, claims which were denied by the commissioner and met with widespread criticism from economists and policymakers. Despite the controversy, McEntarfer had previously received bipartisan support during her Senate confirmation and was recognised for her extensive experience in federal economic agencies.Early educational achievements and career in economicsErika McEntarfer was born in January 1973 and pursued a strong academic path in social sciences and economics. She graduated from Bard College with a bachelor’s degree in social science and subsequently earned a PhD in economics from Virginia Tech. Her academic background laid the foundation for a career devoted to analysing labour market trends and economic data.Work in federal agencies before BLSBefore her appointment at the Bureau of Labor Statistics, McEntarfer accumulated considerable experience within federal government agencies. She worked in the US Department of the Treasury’s Office of Tax Policy and held economist positions at the Census Bureau’s Longitudinal Employer–Household Dynamics Program from 2002 to 2008. Later, she served as head of research for the programme and as a lead labour markets economist at the Census Bureau’s Center for Economic Studies.McEntarfer also spent time as a senior economist in the Council of Economic Advisers under the Biden administration, serving on a non-political basis. This role further established her expertise in economic policy and labour market analysis.Nomination and tenure as BLS commissionerIn July 2023, President Joe Biden nominated McEntarfer to be commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Her nomination received bipartisan support, with the Senate confirming her by an 86–8 vote in January 2024. During her tenure, McEntarfer sought to modernise the BLS and address budget constraints, including a reduction of the household survey sample size used for monthly jobs reports.Under her leadership, the Bureau faced increased scrutiny over data accuracy and procedural issues. The Department of Labor criticised the BLS for insufficient focus on the dissemination of sensitive economic information, prompting McEntarfer to lead efforts to improve transparency and internal controls.Controversy and data revisions during McEntarfer’s tenureMcEntarfer’s time as commissioner was marked by several significant revisions to employment figures that raised concerns among policymakers and economists. In August 2024, the BLS announced a benchmark revision revealing that job growth from April 2023 through March 2024 had been overstated by 818,000 jobs, the second-largest downward adjustment in the agency’s history.Further revisions followed in 2025, with May and June employment figures reduced by 125,000 and 133,000 jobs respectively. Several monthly reports in 2024 also saw downward adjustments ranging from 43,000 to 57,000 jobs, leading to accusations of systematic overestimation. The BLS also experienced technical issues and breaches of data release protocols. In August 2024, a technical glitch delayed the release of monthly job revisions, during which some financial firms obtained data before the official public release. In addition, reports surfaced in 2024 of premature dissemination of economic data to select parties, violating agency policies.Firing and aftermathOn August 1, 2025, following the release of a weak July jobs report and revisions to previous months, President Trump ordered McEntarfer’s firing. The move sparked widespread criticism from current and former economists, including McEntarfer’s predecessor William Beach, who described the firing as “totally groundless.” Others highlighted the damage to the credibility of US economic data systems. The Bureau’s deputy commissioner, William Wiatrowski, was named acting commissioner following McEntarfer’s departure. Oversight investigations by Congressional committees intensified during her tenure, with Republicans raising concerns over data accuracy and public trust.Erika McEntarfer’s career reflects a trajectory from academic achievement through extensive federal economic service to leadership of a key US statistical agency. Her dismissal underscored ongoing political tensions surrounding economic data and its role in public policy and electoral politics.TOI Education is on WhatsApp now. Follow us here.
