Hitting the ice with equipment that doesn’t quite feel right means you’ll spend more time trying to get comfortable than keeping your eyes on the puck. This is especially true of your gloves, which should fit just like…well, you know. These can be some of the most important pieces of gear to get right, because they not only protect your knuckles but also affect how you handle your stick. That can impact your entire game, which is why you need to make sure your gloves fit properly so you can take it to the next level. Read on to learn more about how to size hockey gloves. This hockey glove fitting guide should help you make sure yours fit just as well as a perfectly placed shot in the five-hole.

How to Measure for New Gloves

How do you size hockey gloves? Ensuring the perfect hockey glove fit starts with knowing how to measure your hands. Using a tape measure, you should start by measuring the distance from the top of your middle finger to the base of your palm, in inches. Multiply that number by two, and then you’ll have the optimal-size glove for your hands.

    How Should Hockey Gloves Fit?

The perfect fit for your gloves means they should feel comfortable and not too restrictive, but without feeling too roomy, either. Having a “snug” fit means you should be able to fully bend your fingers without feeling tension, and your joints should match the gloves’ knuckle breaks. Some other important considerations include:

    • Your fingers should not touch the end of the finger stalls — If your fingertips are pressing against the tips of the gloves, that means they’re protruding past the padding and could result in a painful surprise.
    • Your gloves should not overlap with your elbow pads — It’s a good idea to wear your elbow pads when trying on new gloves. This ensures you’ll have full mobility in your wrists and have full protection from the padding. If your gloves are hitting the bottom of your elbow pads when you move your wrists, they’re probably too big.
    • Brand-new gloves should fit slightly tighter — Like most kinds of gear, you’ll need to break in your gloves at first. As you wear them more often, they’ll begin to form better around your hands. Don’t be too concerned if your gloves feel a little tight at first, because they’ll feel more comfortable after you wear them a few times.

Most of the same rules about regular gloves apply to goalie glove and blocker sizing, as well. It should be snug but not too restrictive, plus:

    • If you prefer to catch the puck with your left hand, you want a “regular” style glove.
    • If you prefer to catch pucks with your right hand, you need a “full right” glove.

The general rule of thumb when trying on goalie gloves is that if you can fully close the catcher with minimal resistance, it’s probably the right size. If the mitt is too big, you won’t have the leverage you need to close the glove effectively at its break. Fortunately, goalie gloves are adjustable, so you can just tighten the outer and inner cuffs until it’s to your liking.
