“The best way to predict the future is to create it.” That famous quote is often associated with technology and innovation. But sometimes, creating the future means walking away from a successful corporate career and returning to one’s roots. That is exactly what Vikramdev Mohapatra from Nabarangpur, Odisha, did. After spending 14 years in the IT industry and working with leading technology companies, the BTech graduate made a decision that many would consider risky. He left behind software development and entered an entirely different field — commercial mushroom farming.Today, his venture not only generates significant revenue but also creates employment opportunities in his community.

From software engineer to full-time farmer

Vikramdev completed his BTech in Electronics and Communications Engineering from Biju Patnaik University of Technology, Odisha, in 2012.Like thousands of engineering graduates, he began his career in the IT sector. Over the next 14 years, he worked with several companies, including Discoverture Solutions, Mindtree, Serole Technologies, and LTIMindtree. His professional journey included roles such as software engineer, module lead, technical lead and senior specialist in package implementation. His work involved software development, product implementation, SAP solutions, team management and client coordination. On paper, it was a stable and successful career.Yet, he decided to make a dramatic shift.Instead of continuing in the corporate world, he returned to Nabarangpur and established Ganga Bhumi Mushrooms, a commercial mushroom production and processing unit.

A farming venture that operates throughout the year

Mushroom cultivation is often considered a small-scale agricultural activity. Vikramdev’s venture, however, demonstrates how farming can be transformed into a modern, technology-driven enterprise.According to the available information, his unit produces 500-600 kilograms of mushrooms every day. That translates to 15-18 tonnes of production every month. The mushrooms are supplied to major markets, including Brahmapur and Bhubaneswar, ensuring year-round business operations. The numbers behind the venture are equally impressive.• Daily production: 500-600 kg• Monthly production: 15-18 tonnes• Monthly revenue: Rs 16-19 lakh• Average market price: Around Rs 100-110 per kilogram• Project cost: Approximately Rs 2.56 crore• Government subsidy: Rs 97 lakh under the Mukhyamantri Krushi Udyog Yojana (MKUY)Even after accounting for operating expenses, the venture reportedly generates more than Rs 10 lakh a month.

Creating jobs instead of searching for one

Perhaps the most inspiring aspect of Vikramdev’s journey is that he has transitioned from being a salaried employee to becoming a job creator. His mushroom production unit currently employs 24 people, including 18 women and six men.At a time when many young professionals are exploring opportunities in cities, his story highlights another important possibility — building enterprises in rural India.

    The lesson for students

Engineering education often prepares students for careers in technology, but Vikramdev’s journey shows that a degree does not have to define a person’s entire professional life. The analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities and management skills developed during an engineering programme can be applied far beyond software development. His story also challenges the assumption that success can only be measured through campus placements, multinational companies or corporate salaries.Sometimes, success can be found by returning home, identifying local opportunities and creating something that benefits an entire community. For students standing at a career crossroads, Vikramdev Mohapatra’s journey offers a powerful reminder: education provides skills, but it is courage that determines how those skills are ultimately used.Disclaimer: This article is based on publicly available information, professional profiles and social media posts.
