The ICC has decided to suspend the USA Cricket Board as it attempts to overhaul the leadership and governance structure of the sport in a key market, as per ESPNCricinfo. However, it has been reported that USAC’s suspension will not affect the USA’s participation in the T20 World Cup to be held in India and Sri Lanka next year.
The move was confirmed after a virtual meeting of the ICC Board. It came at a time when American Cricket had been mired in administrative turmoil, power struggles, and questions over its governance model.
Alongside the T20 World Cup, the participation of the United States Cricket team in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics would also not be affected by the USAC’s suspension. The move is solely to enforce reforms by the ICC.

Suspension of USAC amid Governance Concerns
The sudden and immediate reason for USAC’s suspensions has not been disclosed publicly, but the decision follows months of warnings from the international body. Back in July 2024, the USAC was issued a three-month window to conduct fair elections and carry out comprehensive governance reforms.
At that point, the ICC made it clear to the Cricket Board of the United States of America Cricket Board that further actions would be taken if reforms were stalled. The suspension comes at the end of his reprieve, indicating that the USAC failed to meet the ICC’s expectations.
However, the chairman of the USAC, Venu Pisike, has mentioned that they have not received direct communication from the International Cricket Council, hence throwing many into uncertainty over their future.
Olympic Roadmap and formation of a normalisation committee of the ICC
Though the ICC has clarified that the suspension would not have any effect on the USA’s participation in the LA28 Cricket Olympics, where both the USA Men’s and Women’s teams are expected to be medal contenders as the hosts of the Olympic Games.
However, to achieve this, the USAC must secure recognition as the National Governing Body from the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee. However, to achieve this status, they need to have robust operational governance.
In preparation, the ICC’s Normalisation Committee, chaired by Jay Shah, had earlier drawn up a six-step roadmap for reforms. These steps included the introduction of three independent directors of the USAC Board, the dissolution of the current board, and the conduct of fresh elections.
Tensions build up between USAC and the American Cricket Enterprise
The lack of governance within the USAC has been exacerbated by the feud between the board and the American Cricket Enterprise, the former commercial partner and the real force behind leagues like the Major League Cricket and Minor League Cricket in America.
USAC’s decision to terminate the contract with ACE had sparked a legal battle, which further led to instability within the organisation. This has also affected American players, who are reconsidering their decision to play for the side.
Former Kiwi all-rounder Corey Anderson, now a prominent figure in US-criicket expressed his own frustration over the situation. This suspension would only add to the uncertainty over the development of professional cricket in the US.
