As the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 approaches this February, Hollywood actor and Pakistani-American star Kumail Nanjiani has shared a sobering assessment of his home team’s chances. Born in Karachi and a lifelong cricket enthusiast, Nanjiani is a Pakistani-American stand-up comedian, actor, screenwriter, best known for co-writing and starring in the Oscar- nominated film The Big Sick and for his role as Dinesh on HBO’s Silicon Valley. Speaking on The Grade Cricketer podcast on January 15, Nanjiani highlighted that the primary issue facing the 2009 champions is a lack of walk-in players, cricketers so talented they would be picked by any international side. He argued that Pakistan currently struggles with consistency across all three departments, noting that even the basic building blocks like fielding and wicket-keeping are currently areas of concern.
For Nanjiani, the wild unpredictability that fans often rely on is actually a sign of a team that lacks a stable, professional core. He expressed his frustration as a fan, stating that he still has no clear sense of what a balanced Pakistan squad should look like, leaving them vulnerable to more structured opponents like India.
“There are these guys that are just good cricketers… We (Pakistan) are sort of missing the guys who are like, ‘Oh, they can walk on to any team right now.’ I don’t know if we, sadly, have any players that could walk on to any team in the world. I think that’s a fair thing to say. I think what our team really needs help with right now is our bowling, our batting, and our fielding could use some work. And we need a wicket keeper. The wild thing about our team and T20 in general, it could happen! That’s what’s horrible! You still have that little bit of hope. The last couple of World Cups, we’ve gotten sort of lucky and gotten some wild wins.” Nanjiani said.
Nanjiani reflects why India has pulled ahead of Pakistan in cricket
Nanjiani also reflected on the widening chasm in the India-Pakistan rivalry, attributing India’s rise to a superior domestic and franchise system. He praised the Indian Premier League (IPL) for creating a pipeline of versatile all-rounders, a luxury he feels Pakistan currently lacks. The actor lamented that the rivalry has shifted from a contest between two equals to a scenario where Pakistan are frequently on the receiving end of the bashing.
He noted that while there was once a brotherhood vibe and mutual respect between the players, the current atmosphere feels more defined by political tension and a massive disparity in cricketing resources. Nanjiani suggested that until Pakistan finds a way to define roles and develop players with global face value, they will continue to struggle against a powerhouse like India.
“It’s hard for me, because our big rivalry, India-Pakistan, Pakistan has been on the receiving end of the bashing. It’s been very, very difficult to watch because India is undeniably one of the best teams in the world. I think their IPL system is very, very strong. They have a lot of great all-rounders. I know the T20 World Cup is coming up. For me, what’s bothering me is that I still don’t have a good sense of what our squad is going to look like. India-Pakistan matches are very tough for me… one, we were two of the best teams in the world, now Pakistan is not that great and India is the best in the world. It’s really tough also because India is so much more powerful than Pakistan.” Nanjiani concluded.
