NHL.com: Minnesota Wild GM Bill Guerin said that the communication with Quinn Hughes’ camp remains really good and there hasn’t been pressure that an extension hasn’t been worked out, but they could heat up a bit.
“These things take time. There is a lot of things for teams and players to consider and think about. In June, July and August there’s really no pressure. I just think now, getting closer to the season and training camp, it heats up a bit.
“The relationship is there. It’s good. There’s just so much outside noise with podcasters and guys like that, Instagram guys, TikTok. Things are good. I feel like I’m pretty honest in my interviews. There are things I just can’t say, but communication is really good.”

Guerin added that the landscape has changed over the years and players are hitting free agency at a younger age and they’re making more money before they hit free agency, which opens up more options. They can be more choosy about where they want to play, what term they want and for how much.
“We can’t make him sign anything. “We’d love to have him for as long as we can get him, if he’s got something different in his mind he wants to do, there goes our plan.
“We’re always planning, always looking out 3-4 years, and what things are going to look like, then reality takes over as well.”

“There’s a bar with Cale Makar signing that contract in Colorado, but Quinn might be after different things,” said Guerin. “He’s a different guy. He has a different personality and has different things in his life that are important to him. Who knows what he’s gonna want in the end.”
Hughes is a year younger than Makar, and it wouldn’t be surprising if he’s looking for something similar.
The Fourth Period: Reports have a Hughes deal in the three- to five-year range, with a cap hit between $18 and $20 million. GM Guerin wouldn’t say much when it was brought up; what if he can’t get Quinn signed to an extension?
“I don’t really love getting into hypotheticals, because then people on social media run with it and they take your word as gospel,” he said.
